7 September 2014, 5:54 p.m. – TEN-TIME defending champion University of the East Junior Warriors
made quick work of the UST Junior Tiger Spikers, 25-10, 25-23, 25-19, in the
second round of UAAP boys’ volleyball tournament at the Adamson Gym on Sunday,
Sept. 7.

The Junior Tiger Spikers remain at
fourth place with a 6-5 record while UE is still unbeaten in 11 games.

UST tried to keep the game close early
in the third set after Miguel Competente scored back-to-back spikes followed by
a hit from Lorenz Señoron, 9-11.

But the Junior Warriors pulled away
again as Joshua Umandal completed a combination play and Ron Medalla buried a
down-the-line kill, 19-12.

Medella hammered another attack and an
ace to seal the game for UE, 25-19.

“I am happy with how my players
played today. Even if it’s UE, they fought hard. They have offense and
defense,” UST head coach Clarence Esteban said.

The Tigers had a chance to steal the
second set after a furious 8-2 run capped by a block of Teo de Guzman to tie
things up at 20.

But UST
committed costly errors to give UE a 23-25 win.

UE overpowered UST in attacks, tallying
32 spikes compared to only 16 of the Tiger Spikers.

None of the UST players scored in
double digits as Compentente led the team with just seven points. Medalla
topscored for the Junior Warriors with 14 markers.

UST will next face Ateneo de
Manila University on Saturday, Sept. 12, at the same venue. Karl
