Jan. 28, 2015, 5:40 p.m. – THE UST Tiger
Spikers upended a pesky Far Eastern University in straight sets, 25-21, 25-23,
25-22, in the second round of the UAAP Season 77 men’s volleyball tournament at
the Mall of Asia Arena Wednesday.

UST won its third game in a row to
share first place with two-time defending champion National University and
Adamson University with 7-2 win-loss record.

Mark Gil Alfafara led the Tiger Spikers
with 14 points followed by team captain Romnick Rico with 13.

“The game was expected, napaghandaan
talaga namin sila,” head coach Odjie Mamon said. “Even though
nalamangan kami ng FEU, kalmado lang kami kasi we were in control of the
game.”

Despite trailing in the second set, the
Tiger Spikers mounted a 9-2 run to grab the momentum and establish a 23-20 lead
before Rico finished off FEU with consecutive attacks.

In the third set, UST erected an
eight-point lead as the Tiger Spikers unleashed an array of combination plays
to break the FEU defense, 18-10.

The Tiger Spikers hope to gain solo
first when they face Adamson on Saturday, Jan. 31. Josiah Darren G.
