Feb. 20, 2015, 5:29 a.m. – THE UST Male Woodpushers’
winning run came to a screeching halt after a heartbreaking 1.5-2.5 loss
against league-leading De La Salle University in the elimination round of the
UAAP Season 77 men’s chess tournament at the La Salle Henry Sy Hall Thursday.
UST, now with 24 points from a a 6-1-3 win-draw-loss card,
dropped to third place behind the Green Archers and Adamson University.
Christian Flores was the lone victor for the Male
Woodpushers after edging La Salle’s Aglipay Oberio.
UST’s Hierry Manaloto and Timothy So Kua bowed to Franz
Grafil and Jerad Docena, respectively, while Steven Dacanay settled for a draw
against Green Archer Giovanni Mejia.
The Female Woodpushers avoided an upset loss against the
University of the East after forcing a 2-2 draw.
Her team down two games to one, Cyamir Villanueva snatched
the much-needed win for UST at the expense of UE’s Joymee Morales.
The Female Woodpushers, however, remained in fifth place
with a total of 17 points from a 2-4-4 record.
The UST Woodpushers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 21,
