July 6, 2015, 8:40 a.m. – THE UST Tiger Fencers fell
short in their gold medal aspirations in a disappointing third day in the
Philippine National Games (PNG) Luzon leg at the Philsports Complex, Pasig
City, Sunday.

UST settled for two silver medals and a bronze. The UST
Fencers now sport a 1-3-6 gold-silver-bronze medal tally.

Tiger Fencers Rodolfo Duterte, Michael Duterte, Dennis
Gascon and Dino Arribas secured silver after surviving powerhouse De La Salle
University in the semifinals, 44-43, but ran out of steam against the
University of the Philippines, 37-45, in the finals of the men’s team epee.

UST tied the match at 29 but failed to overtake the Fighting
Maroons after UP’s Rod Allen Rolda dominated Arribas in the eighth bout for a
40-34 lead entering the last round.

Sisters Anchinette and Patricia Macaraig, together with
Kathlyn Echavez and Lady Racine Natividad, settled for bronze after a close
42-43 loss against UP in the women’s foil semifinal.

“Binigay lahat ng makakaya ng buong team. Maganda naman
‘yung pinakita ng team. Nanghihinayang kami kasi gold na sana,” UST men’s
epee captain Rodolfo Duterte told the Varsitarian.

UST may add another three medals for the team events of
women’s epee, men’s foil and women’s sabre today at the last day of the
tournament to be held also at the Philsports Complex. John Chester P. Fajardo
