UST WAS on track to bag its 44th UAAP general championship, and its fourth consecutive one, when the season was cancelled due to the new coronavirus pandemic.

The school tallied 209 points ahead of De La Salle University’s 181 points and Ateneo de Manila University’s 162.

UST collected five gold medals, five silver, and three bronze from 10 events. La Salle had a 1-5-6 gold-silver-bronze tally while Ateneo de Manila University finished with a 4-3-3 slate.

The premature end to UAAP’s 82nd season meant that the six remaining sports events will no longer be played, denying other competing schools the chance to overtake UST.

The cancelled events were football, athletics, baseball, softball, and lawn tennis.

Malaking bagay ang winning culture ng UST since it gives the players a trend to follow,” Rodrigo Sambuang, UST’s athletics moderator, told the Varsitarian in a previous interview.

The men’s judo team earlier scored a rare fifth consecutive title on March 2.

In the much-awaited volleyball events, both the Tiger Spikers and Golden Tigresses only played two games each. The men’s team were winless in two games while the women’s squad had one victory and a loss.

“The team prepared harder this season. It’s just sad that UAAP was cancelled. I know that they’re after the health and safety of the people involved, especially the fans and players,” graduating Tiger Spiker Jalex Mendiola told the Varsitarian.
