PBA legend Patrimonio joins Tigers’ training staff


July 30, 2015, 6:04p.m. - THE UST Growling Tigers beefed up their training staff after tapping the services of Alvin Patrimonio, one of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA)'s all-time greats.

The four-time PBA Most Valuable Player will be mentoring the Growling Tigers as the new big men’s coach and will especially teach all of the players his patented post moves.

“Nakikita ko na gusto talaga nilang mag-improve," Patrimonio told the Varsitarian.

Growling Tigers escape San Beda, enter Fr. Martin Cup finals

June 15, 2015, 12:41 p.m. - THE UST Growling Tigers banked on a late run to surge past the San Beda College Red Lions, 75-72, and enter the finals of the 21st Fr. Martin Cup at the Arellano University Gym Monday.

Down by nine in the third period, the Tigers unleashed a barrage of 3-pointers led by Kent Lao to go ahead, 70-66, with less than two minutes left.

A three-point play by Ed Daquioag sealed the win for UST.

Lao, who buried three triples in UST's fourth-quarter rally, led the Tigers with 22 points. Daquioag and Louie Vigil added 16 apiece.

Daquioag earns his stripes as Tigers’ main scorer

DESPITE the UST Growling Tigers' disappointing exit in the FilOil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup, the emergence of Ed Daquioag as a leader and capable scorer is a bright spot that the Tigers can look forward to in the upcoming UAAP season.

With UST missing the services of Renzo Subido and Karim Abdul due to various medical concerns, and Kevin Ferrer to commitment to the national team, Daquioag carried the Tigers on his back and has been a near unstoppable force on the offensive end, averaging 20.38 points per game in eight outings.

UST Growling Tigers miss Filoil quarter-finals with narrow loss vs La Salle

June 6, 2015, 9:28 p.m. - THE UST Growling Tigers fumbled in their final possession and the De La Salle University Green Archers escaped with a 84-82 victory and book a quarterfinals slot in the 2015 Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan Saturday.

With the score tied at 82, UST had ball possession in the last 6.5 seconds of the game. But Jamil Sheriff turned the ball over allowing La Salle star Jerom Teng to score the game-winning layup and end the Tigers' Filoil run.

Daquioag carries UST past Cobras in FilOil

May 3, 2015, 7:28 p.m. - VETERAN Ed Daquiaog carried an undermanned UST Growling Tigers to a 66-59 victory against the Southwestern University Cobras in the 2015 Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan Wednesday.

Trailing by two points at the five-minute mark of the game, 52-54, the Growling Tigers unleashed a 14-5 run against the Cobras, with 12 points coming from Daquiaog, to steal the victory.

CEU Scorpions outgun UST in Filoil

May 24, 2015, 11:20 a.m. - THE UST Growling Tigers succumbed to the Centro Escolar University (CEU) Scorpions, 77-82, in the 2015 FilOil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at the Arena in San Juan Saturday.

Despite huge performances from Ed Daquioag and Kevin Ferrer, UST obviously missed missed the services of center Karim Abdul as the Scorpions pounded the paint led by Alfred Batino who scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

Daquioag and Ferrer combined for 60 points but no other Tiger cracked double digits. In contrast, the Scorpions showcased a balanced offense with six of their players scoring at least 10 markers.

Ferrer lifts Growling Tigers past UP

May 20, 2015, 9:46 p.m. - KEVIN Ferrer powered the UST Growling Tigers to a 76-72 victory over the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons in the 2015 Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at the San Juan Arena Wednesday.

Ferrer, who returned from a stint with the Sinag Pilipinas national team in the Southeast Asian Basketball Association championships, finished with 19 points as the Tigers won their second game in four outings.

Growling Tigers fall prey to Red Lions in FilOil

May 2, 2015, 10:36 p.m. - AN ERROR-plagued UST Growling Tigers suffered their second loss at the hands of the San Beda College Red Lions, 64-74, in the 2015 Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at the San Juan Arena Saturday.

The reigning NCAA champions overwhelmed the Growling Tigers at the start of the second half with a 28-point output in the third quarter highlighted by a 20-8 run for a commanding 61-48 advantage.

San Beda continued to pound on UST and stretched its lead to 19 points early in the fourth after a putback jumper from Pierre Tankoua, 67-48.

Filoil: Bonleon shines as Tigers rout Mapua

April 30, 2015, 10:46 a.m. - THE UST Growling Tigers banked on a fiery fourth quarter to blast the Mapua Cardinals, 78-59, and notch their first win in the 2015 Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at the San Juan Arena Tuesday.

The still undermanned UST side bounced back following a close opening day loss against the University of the East.

Mario Bonleon led the Growling Tigers anew as he unloaded 13 consecutive points in a 17-3 UST run to establish a 15-point lead in the fourth quarter, 72-57.
