Tigresses still in contention in Fr. Martin’s Cup

THE UST Tigresses evened their win-loss standing (2-2) as they routed the College of Saint Benilde Lady Blazers, 80-57, in the Fr. Martin’s Cup last May 23 at the San Beda College Gym.

Veteran Juvy Salazar gave the Tigresses an early boost on the offensive end with seven points in the first quarter, mostly on inside incursions. But it was Kath Buyco who gave the Taft-based dribblers the run-around with her outstanding ball handling and a couple of steals, leaving them scoreless during the entire half of the second canto.

Sunkist-UST Tigers axed in PBL

AFTER winning their first three games, the Sunkist-UST Tigers failed to sustain their hot start as they lost seven of their last eight games and got booted out in the eliminations of the Philippine Basketball League Unity Cup.

The exodus of key players hounded the RFM-backed Tigers all throughout the eliminations as they groped for the form that led them to the semifinals last conference. A spate of injuries added more woes to their latest campaign.

Alwyn Espiritu, Emerson Oreta and Dondon Villamin were signed up by the other teams prior to this conference.

Parado replaces Aric

COACHING in the Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) is one of the most sought-after jobs of coaches dreaming to hit big time.

Tracksters fall to ‘mercenary’ athletes

UNEXPECTED opponents and the exit of a key player became the main reasons why the male tracksters, despite nailing a strong first-place finish last season, made a repeat of the 64th UAAP season drama, skidding down to fourth place in the just concluded 66th season.

After a year of rigorous training, all seemed well for the Tiger Tracksters until a key player decided to abandon them in January, just two months before the tournament. Joar Calvadores opted to enroll for the third semester at the De La Salle University after four years of wearing the Tiger jersey.

Spikers spiked out of beach volleyball meet

UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas failed to deliver the necessary killer blows against Far Eastern University, losing a 21-16 decision to the Tamaraws, bidding farewell to their quarterfinals chances and a trip to the islands of Boracay on the final play date of the 6th Nestea Beach Volleyball Intercollegiate Championship last April 7 at the La Salle Greenhills sandcourts in San Juan.

UST and FEU were actually neck-to-neck in the early goings of the match, strategically exchanging points from the onset.

A rocky year for UST

WHILE controversies are staples in the histories of institutions everywhere, the University of Santo Tomas went through a rocky ten months last year. Controversies involving top UST officials and, at the national level, corruption charges versus government officials grabbed the attention of the Thomasian community.

But there were high points, such as sterling performances in the board exams and sports victories that will also make academic year 2007-2008 a memorable one.
