Golden Sox beat Adamson for first win

THE UST Golden Sox scored five consecutive runs in the crucial stretch to register their first win of the season at the expense of Adamson University, 12-5, in the UAAP baseball tournament at the Rizal Memorial Stadium last Jan. 19.

The Golden Sox improved to a 1-3 win-loss record after losing their first three games against National University (0-13), De La Salle University (4-14) and Ateneo de Manila University (6-12).

With the game tied at five, UST found its way back at the bottom of the sixth inning after firing five Runs Batted In (RBIs) for a 10-5 advantage.

UST-UP match ends in 1-1 draw

THE UST Golden Booters weathered another late surge to draw against University of the Philippines (UP), 1-1, in the UAAP men’s football tournament at the Far Eastern University-Diliman field last Jan. 19.

The Fighting Maroons unleashed back-to-back attempts in stoppage time to try and take the game after Gabriel Mendoza scored the equalizer in the 69th minute.

UP’s Carlos Monfort was setting up Fe Baya for a goal with a pass from the right wing.

Monfort’s pass put Baya in a one-on-one situation with UST’s goalkeeper but the goalie quickly dove for the ball before Baya could kick it in.

Just a few seconds before the final whistle was blown, Francisco Santos emerged ahead of the pack after a scramble in the midfield.

UST athletes make their mark in SEA Games

THE PHILIPPINES recorded its worst finish since joining the Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) in 1977, crashing to seventh place with a measly 101-medal haul during the biennial meet hosted by Myanmar last Dec. 11 to 22.

But Thomasian athlets provided some consolation, collecting a total of 27 medals. The men’s and women’s taekwondo teams produced four gold, four silver and six bronze medals, while the athletics squad contributed 13 medals (6-4-3). The national team had a total of 29 gold, 24 silver and 38 bronze medals.

Former Lady Jin Jade Zafra clinched the gold in the women’s -57 kilograms division after defeating Worawong Pongpanit of Thailand, 7-1.

UST Tennisters dominate foes in UAAP

The UST Female Tennisters defeated University of the Philippines (UP), 4-1, while the Male Tennisters took down rival De La Salle University, 3-2, in the UAAP lawn tennis tournament at the Olivarez Sports Center in Parañaque City last Jan.12.

Leading the game, 2-1, the duo of UAAP Season 74 Rookie of the Year April Santos and Kim Malinis easily snatched the first set of the fourth match, 6-2. But the UST pair struggled on defense in the next frame allowing Lady Maroons Joanna Peña and Monivic Santos to force a deciding set, 2-6.

Tiger Spikers stymie late UE run; lose to Ateneo

THE UST Tiger Spikers needed four sets to hold off a pesky University of the East squad, 25-17, 25-15, 20-25, 28-26, at the start of the second round of the UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan last Jan. 19.

Reigning co-MVP Mark Gil Alfafara said complacency and poor floor defense allowed UE, which suffered its eighth straight loss, to catch up.

“We relaxed a little in the third set that’s why they gained confidence. We also had problems with reception late in the fourth set,” said Alfafara, who led UST with a game-high 26 points in another stellar performance that put him in close second in the MVP race behind Ateneo de Manila University’s sensational rookie Mark Espejo.

Lady Booters miss game-winning goal vs FEU

THE UST Lady Booters missed a game-winning goal in stoppage time and settled for a scoreless draw against perennial nemesis Far Eastern University (FEU) in the UAAP women’s football tournament at the FEU-Diliman field last Jan. 19.

UST almost scored an upset against the Lady Tamaraws, but rookie Daryl Ann Mendoza muffed a soft kick, which hit only the goal’s side bar, from the right flank.

Alina Rose Araneta tried to score late for FEU, but her attempt was deflected by the UST defenders.

The España-based squad remained on top with 11 points via a 3-2-1 win-draw-loss slate, while FEU and Ateneo de Manila University are tied at second place with eight markers apiece.

Paskuhan 2012 draws crowd of 70,000

DESPITE the “end of the world” prediction last Dec. 21, there was no stopping UST from holding its annual Paskuhan celebration.

An estimated 70,000 Thomasians and outsiders gathered for the main program at the UST Grandstand and Open Field to watch the Salinggawi Dance Troupe and performances from bands like Spongecola, 2 Years Apart, Silent Sanctuary, Letter Day Story, Join the Club, December Avenue, Mayonnaise, Paraluman, Urbandub, and Radioactive Sago Project.

Yael Yuzon, lead vocalist of Spongecola, said he was overwhelmed by the crowd’s enthusiasm.

Pido still tailor-fit for Growling Tigers

The bad news is Pido Jarencio won’t fulfill his dream of coaching his own team in the professional league soon. But the good news is he’s staying with the Growling Tigers in the next UAAP season where they are the clear favorite to bag the title.

No less than legendary UST coach Aric del Rosario is convinced that Jarencio is the best man to steer the Tigers to at least another Finals appearance.

“He’s tried and tested so he should stay on,” the 72-year-old del Rosario, architect of the Tigers’ four-straight titles in the 90s, said in Filipino. “He should just keep trying and he should improve the confidence of the team.”

Woodpushers clinch 2nd place

UST MALE Woodpushers claimed solo second place following a 2.5-1.5 victory over the Ateneo de Manila University in the UAAP chess tournament at the Far Eastern University (FEU) Technology Building last Feb. 3.

The Male Woodpushers, who last held the crown in 1999, collected 22.5 points after nine meetings to stay within striking distance of six-time defending champion FEU Tamaraws, who remained on top with 24.5 markers.

UST team captain Patrick Erle Florendo and sophomore Steven James Dacanay racked up twin victories against Ateneo’s Louell Que and Lance See, despite the absence of veteran player Jude Fronda due to an academic commitment.

Golden Sox bow down to NU; Softbelles falter vs UE

MENTAL lapses proved costly for the UST Golden Sox as they bowed down to defending champion National University, 7-12, in the UAAP baseball tournament at the Rizal Memorial Stadium last Jan. 31.

UST slid to third place with a 5-3 slate while NU grabbed the solo second spot, 6-2, behind Ateneo de Manila University (7-1).

The Golden Sox, who beat the Bulldogs in their first-round encounter (7-5), pulled to within one, 5-6, at the bottom of the fifth inning. Team captain Glenn Tuazon walked to the home plate when rookie Bernardo Siaotong was hit by pitch, which accounted for a walk to the first base.
