Softbelles at bat for the top spot

FORGET about the UST Softbelles’ humiliating 0-10 defeat against the University of the East.

A decision by the UAAP board forfeiting the game kept UST’s clean slate, and propelled the squad to the top of the team standings with a 3-0 record alongside defending champion Adamson University.

UST Coach Sandy Barredo said UE’s game against UST and the University of the Philippines were forfeited because shortstopper Maricar Barrientos was not included in the official line-up submitted to the screening committee.

Nursing lives another day in intramurals

FEAR of elimination proved to be a driving force for the College of Nursing that got to play another day in the Thomasian Goodwill Games Men’s Football Games, after a 3-1 do-or-die victory against highly-favored College of Rehabilitation Sciences (CRS) team last January 15 at the UST open field.

Ian Badilla unleashed a long shot into the unguarded goal of CRS in the 79th minute of the game to bring Nursing’s lead to 3-1. The mistake came as CRS goalie Ian Perfecto attempted to disrupt the offense at the goal area, allowing Badilla a clear view of the net.

CRS’ defense was rattled by DJ Mendoza’s goal at the very first minute of the game that gave Nursing an early lead.

A Thomasian’s ‘declaration of change’

LAST year may have been wrought with challenges but the year 2010 brings the promise of change for Filipinos, especially with the first automated national elections. Along with this, Thomasians have also come up with their own “declaration of change” in the form of New Year’s resolutions, which will hopefully last up until the end of the year of the tiger. The Varsitarian has compiled a rundown of the more uncommon things Thomasians want to change or improve this year.

What is your New Year resolution?

Thomasian athletes, Season 71’s best

COUNT these Thomasian athletes into Season 71 immortality.

Led by nine Most Valuable Players (MVP)s, the UST contingent not only flaunted its dominance in the overall medal race but also paraded a fine crop individual talents who steered the Pontifical University to its 36th general championship.

Male Shuttlers cop second place

THE UST Male Shuttlers’ season-ending 6-1 win-loss record may have betrayed their title aspirations.

But the performance was enough to catapult the Male Shuttlers to bridesmaid honors this season, an upgrade from last year’s fourth-place finish.

Another classic finish

DÉJÀ VU! For the past two years, the University of Santo Tomas and De La Salle University seemed to be following the same trend in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) general championship race — the Green Archers sprint ahead of the pack in the first half of the season, only to be overtaken by UST in the end.

And cliché as it may sound, history repeated itself for the Taft-based University as it failed to learn from its past mistakes and succumbed once more to the ferocious Tigers’ balanced athletic attack toward the second semester.

The Tigers behind the conquest

CAPPING off another sterling run en route to its 29th UAAP General Championship, the University recognized the heroes behind the glory through the Athletic Commencement and Awards Day at the UST Gym Annex last March 16.

Key championships

A football heartbreaker

WHEN the UST Growling Booters entered the 2002 UAAP football finals, they knew they were facing daunting odds in their quest to recapture their lost crown.

Not only were the España-based Booters squaring off with the same team that dethroned them a year ago, they were doing so without reliable mid-fielder Randy Leyble, who was suspended after being slapped with a red-card violation in their previous game.

UST is UAAP champion for the 34th time

For THE ninth straight year, UST has shown once again IT IS lord of the UAAP jungle by grabbing its 34th overall general championship and wrapping up its Season 69 campaign on a high note.

UST won 13 UAAP titles in 26 disciplines for a whopping 331 points, relegating perennial rival University of the Philippines-Diliman (UP) and Far Eastern University (FEU) to second and third places with 254 and 218 markers, respectively.

Lady Shuttlecockers finish bridesmaid despite young roster

DESPITE a rookie-laden team, the UST Lady Shuttlecockers posted a gallant bridesmaid finish in the UAAP Season 69 Badminton wars last March 4 at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall.

“They made it this far because they wanted to prove their worth,” head coach Noli Cajefe told the Varsitarian. “It’s just that they went up against great players.”
