New courtside reporter

SHE IS the new face to watch out for on the sidelines.

Communication Arts senior Donna Belle Llabres is UST’s new UAAP courtside reporter for Studio 23, edging out five other UST sportscaster hopefuls.

The neophyte reporter admitted she is not into basketball, but has come to know the game through her friends from the varsity ranks.

Being UST’s courtside reporter was a long-overdue desire for Llabres.

Yambao wins anew

UST TRACKSTER Liza Yambao has done it again.

Yambao added another feather to her cap as she won the Olympic Day Run’s 10K women’s division last June 26 at the Baywalk Park, Roxas Boulevard.

Yambao, the 2003 Milo Marathon National Champion, checked in at 39 minutes and 38 seconds to top the tournament, while Hazel Madamba of the Philippine Navy placed second.

On the distaff side, UST’s Ben Alejandrino settled for a bridesmaid finish in the men’s event. Alejandrino lagged 37 seconds behind eventual victor Cresencio Sabal of the Philippine Army.

Mountaineers triumph

WITH BRAWN and agility developed from various mountain crusades, the UST Mountaineering Club (USTMC) won the Philippine Ultimate Association’s Summer of Love Frisbee Tournament championship after disposing Sunken Pleasure, 15-10, last July 2.

USTMC, bearing the moniker España United, made quick work of its initial encounters on the same day. It downed the Oltimate Disc Athlete (13-7) and Disc Devil Bee (11-4) to end the tourney with a masterful 3-0 win-loss card.

Woodpushers hoping for miracle

WITH mounting opposition and the departure of seasoned veterans, the UST Woodpushers will travel a rugged terrain toward the championship.

“Last year, we had big hopes for the championship. But this year, we are just hoping to at least duplicate the runner-up finish we had,” UST head coach National Master (NM) Winston Silva said.

UST Champs relive glory days

IT COULD not get any closer than this.

The Growling Tigers forced the UST Champions to work in a pulsating exhibition match that ended at 97-97 in regulation last July 5.

Down by as much as 13 points in the second quarter, the alumni team battled to regain the lead, 82-81, midway into the fourth quarter behind a close-range bucket from Red Bull Barako guard Cyrus Baguio.

UST assistant coach Lester del Rosario, a former Growling Tiger, exchanged three-pointers with Growling Tigers rookie Dylan Ababou, forcing a see-saw end-game battle.

Shuttlecockers fall short in JVC tilt

THE JVC Badminton Championships crown has remained elusive to the UST Shuttlecockers as they bowed out of the tournament last July 9 at the Glorietta Activity Center.

Tigers Spikers eye crown

SOMETIMES, the raw desire to win is enough to catapult a young and inexperienced team to an almost impossible victory. Most of the time, however, the sure-fire ammunitions—talent and experience—are key to bring a team to nothing less than a championship.

The Tiger Spikers learned this the hard way.

“Although we played tough, our inexperience caused our downfall,” head coach Emiliano Lontoc admitted.

Lady Spikers fall to Lady Archers

BEING tough, sometimes, is not enough.

The Lady Spikers showed remarkable resilience throughout the conference, bucking a so-so first round and several lineup problems to make the Shakey’s V-League Third Conference Finals.

Their weaknesses, however, caught up with them in the most crucial games of the fledgling league as perennial adversary De La Salle University (DLSU), led by MVP Maureen Penetrante, emerged with its second championship.

Zen master visits UST

BEFORE the Chicago Bulls’ unstoppable tandem of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen and the Los Angeles Lakers’ dynamic duo of Shaquille O’ Neal and Kobe Bryant experienced Phil Jackson’s coaching prowess, Thomasians had the privilege of being mentored by one of the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) greatest coaches of all time.

Jackson, together with eight former NBA players, conducted a three-hour basketball clinic in UST on May 7, 1984.
