THE UST Male Tennisters outmuscled the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 3-2, to advance to the Final Four of the UAAP Season 81 men’s lawn tennis tournament at the Colegio San Augustin-Bulacan Sunday.
Male Tennister Dave Mosqueda opened the matches with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over UP’s Auden Paduganan, while the pair of Francis Lanzado and Bernlou Bering dominated Fighting Maroons Harvey Alanis and Emmanuel Fuellas, 7-6, 6-3.
Tied at two matched apiece, the UST duo of Clarence Cabahug and Ken Paradela ended the final day of eliminations with a 6-3, 6-3 win over UP’s CJ Austria and Elijah Arevalo.
The Male Tennisters will next face the twice-to-beat Ateneo de Manila University on April 6, Saturday, 8 a.m., at the same venue.
In women’s play, Ateneo dumped defending champion Female Tennisters, 4-1, to settle for fifth place.
Female Tennisters Ingrid Gonzales and Shu Gitalan gave UST its lone win of the day after defeating Ateneo’s Camille So and Martina Bautista, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, before Lady Eagle Shaira Rivera mauled Immaville Gervacio, 6-2, 6-0.
The Ateneo tandem of Jana Hernandez and Janelle Llavore secured the win after outlasting UST’s Ivana Caballero and Meann San Jose, 6-1, 7-6.
The women’s team ended the season with a 2-6 win-loss record.
