THE UST Female Tennisters ended the first round of the UAAP Season 86 women’s tennis tournament with a 5-0 sweep of the DLSU Lady Green Tennisters at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Court on Saturday, Mar. 2.
Alex Santos drew first blood after outclassing DLSU’s Maikee Vicencio (7-6, 6-0) before UST’s tandem of Miles Vitaliano and Princess Gom-os overwhelmed Lady Green Tennisters Amor Idjao and Arianne Nilasca (6-0, 6-3).
Kaye Emana then knocked down Lady Green Tennister Annika Diwa to secure UST’s win, 6-2, 6-2.
UST Female Tennisters Minette Bentillo and Justine Maneja dominated DLSU’s duo of Jed Aquino and Jam Madis (6-0, 6-2) before Patricia Lim made quick work of Lady Green Tennister Stef Martin (6-0, 6-3).
“What we did today is medyo minix-up ‘yung lineup sa second doubles so in a way, ‘yong opponents maguguluhan sa (second round) kung ano ba ang ila-lineup ng UST,” Female Tennisters head coach Dennis Sta. Cruz told the Varsitarian.
“Iyon ‘yong tingin kong advantage namin na mas deep ‘yong bench namin. Coming off two straight wins na 5-0, sana na-boost ‘yong confidence nila individually.“
UST finished the first round with a 3-1 win-loss tally, while DLSU had a 1-3 record for the fourth spot. National University remained atop the standings with a perfect 4-0 tally, while University of the Philippines 2-2) and Adamson University (0-4) claimed the third and fifth spots, respectively.
