Society’s foundation in erosion

IN HIS keynote address at the Campus Conference last Oct. 22, UST Rector Rev. Fr. Tamerlane Lana, O.P. expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of the family as an institution.

“The foundations of the family have weakened. The values that strengthen them have eroded. And with the emergence of the pseudo-marital relationships, we would not be surprised if families will eventually suffer from identity crisis.”

Nang ma-‘Vuisit’ ang admin

Noon Po Sa Amin

Their wishes at their command

IF YOU think the administrators only wish for themselves, think again. Because they also wish for things only they can understand.

“Para sa akin siguro the thing that we can do is to do something for the least. Kasi we are celebrating the birth of Jesus who has a preferential love for the least, not only the poor, but the sick, those people who are sidelined by society, the rejects, for the love of all human beings.”

The annual Thomasian wishlist

Faculty of Civil Law

“To bring back the glory days of UST. To do that we must work hand-in-hand with the best graduates of law and at the same time bar passers which can lead the country in years to come.”
- Albert John Puchero, 1st yr

“My Christmas wish would be for the Faculty to be blessed with additional materials like books and other facilities for the students.”
- Michael Ang, 1st yr

Goodbye, Joe

JOSE “Joe” Guevara never failed to amuse readers with his clever and witty one-liners. His widely read column, “Point of Order,” appeared daily on the editorial page of the Manila Bulletin until that fateful Monday morning last Dec. 2, when Guevara wrote his last line.

He succumbed to cardiac arrest at the Makati Medical. He was 85.

Free Hepa B screening

THE UST Health Service conducted a free Hepatitis B screening last Nov. 6-16.

Hepatitis B is a contagious disease caused by the Hepa B virus (HBV). According to UST Health Service director Dr. William Olalia, it is the leading liver infection that causes death worldwide.

Today, a million people die yearly from HBV-induced liver disease, which is 100 times more infectious than HIV. Olalia said the free analysis provides awareness if one is a carrier of the disease.

UST wins National Science Quiz Bee

THOMASIAN quiz wizards emerged first runner-up in the recently concluded National Science, Invention and Technology Quiz Bee last November 22 at the Central Exchange Mall in Pasay City. Biology junior Michael Rico Mesina and Political Science sophomore Wilfred Ritona bested 20 other universities to place behind UP Los Banos in the final round.

Christmas in the delivery room

ON CHRISTMAS eve, the Nativity will be relieved over and over again at the hospital delivery room (DR).

Instead of celebrating the noche buena with their family, doctors, nurses, and midwives will attend to due maternity emergencies, much like of the shepherds who helped Joseph and Mary during the birth of Jesus Christ some 2,000 years ago.

These people aren’t masochists. The medical staff would rather go off-duty during Christmas eve.

Christmas in cyberspace

Cybershopping

If you think that Christmas shopping is the only thing you can do with a click of your mouse, think again. Cyberspace has revolutionized nearly every inch of the holiday season.

With everything going digital through the Internet, one can’t help but certainly feel the cyber-Christmas spirit. The virtual Santa roaming in websites may just as well be carrying gigabits of gifts to cyber freaks.

UCPB exec talks on coco levy scam

UNITED Coconut Planter’s Bank (UCPB) board member and Coconut Industry and Reforms executive director Jose Faustino reported on the uncertainty revolving around the use of the coconut levy fund in a talk last month at the Tanghalang Teresita Quirino, UST Graduate School.

According to Faustino, having farmer group representatives in the board of UCPB and other companies where the coco levy fund is invested is not enough.
