Golden Memories

What is the most memorable place in UST?

“Benavides Park. I like the ambiance and the lights during Christmas.”
- Marichelle Balay, Tourism, College of Education

“Sa mga benches in front of the UST chapel. ‘Yun kasi ang tambayan ng barkada kapag walang ginagawa at kapag nagre-relax after exams.”

Celebrities celebrate the faith

CELEBRITIES hold sway in all areas of life. This is true not only in politics and entertainment, but also in religion.

Faithful to their vocation as “role models,” some of today’s most popular personalities stand up for their faith, unpopular it may be. Despite the demands of their career and the temptations of their trade, these celebrities do not only express their Catholic beliefs, but live them without pretense.

Stigma of a wrong decision

GENDER Reassignment Surgery (GRS) or “sex change” has become a major concern among physicians today due to the multifaceted issues this growing industry involves. In the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery’s 12th Postgraduate Course in Bioethics last Feb. 5 at the Continuing Medical Education Auditorium, physicians discussed the psychological, physical, and bioethical implications of GRS, as well as transsexualism and homosexuality.

The fear factor

PEOPLE who start feeling dizzy, frazzled, and nervous the moment they step into an elevator are most of the time mistaken to be weird. They feel their heart beat faster and their hands become cold and clammy as they witness the steel doors slowly close the gap between their feet and the ground. As much as possible, these people will prefer the long and tiresome stairs instead.

Archbishop launches pro-poor program

MANILA Archbishop Gaudencio Rosales launched the nationwide charity foundation called “Pondong Batangan” to aid the country’s poor during the 10th Pope Leo XIII Lecture Symposium at the Medicine Auditorium last Feb. 2.

The name of the project was inspired by Rosales’ favorite Batangueño proverb: “Anumang magaling, kahit maliit, basta’t malimit ay patungong langit.”

Beato Angelico canteen burglarized

BURGLARS broke into the Timbale canteen at the back of the Beato Angelico Building last month, taking around P10,000 from the cash register.

According to the University’s Security Office, the burglars scaled the perimeter wall by climbing up the cement post of the steel fence along España Boulevard.

Security guard Leopoldo Valmera, who discovered the intrusion a little after midnight, said he saw the lower part of the canteen’s glass door smashed. It was apparently caused by a steel chair found near the door. The intruders took the cash register.

UST volunteers to build houses for Aytas

THE OFFICE for Community Development (OCD) launched the first Action Camp for Thomasian Students (Acts), which seeks to rally Thomasian volunteerism in helping build houses for Aytas in Sitio Mabilog, Tarlac this summer.

According to OCD director and Acts project coordinator Joey Cruz, the housing project, the first of its kind for UST, will benefit the University’s 16 partner communities.

New academic programs planned

THE UNIVERSITY will introduce new or modified academic programs in the Conservatory of Music, Institute of Technological Courses (ITC), College of Education and the Faculty of Arts and Letters next school year, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Armando de Jesus told the Varsitarian.

Admiring the graduates, the great runners

“I give thanks to my God always on your account for the grace of God bestowed on you in Christ Jesus, that in him you were enriched in every way, with all discourse and all knowledge, as the testimony to Christ was confirmed among you, so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.” - 1 Corinthians 1:4-7

LOOKING at the extremely happy and relieved faces of this school year’s graduates, I cannot help but be amused by the peculiar position I am in.
