De la Rosa gets award for communication excellence

FORMER UST Rector Fr. Rolando de la Rosa, O.P. was recently honored with the Communication Excellence and Organization (CEO EXCEL) Award for leading the successful Quadricentennial festivities.

De la Rosa received the award along with nine other leaders and corporate executives last July 12.

The annual CEO EXCEL Award given by the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Philippines since 2005 recognizes top Philippine-based business executives who have skillfully used communication strategies in achieving their organizations’ objectives as well as advancing reputation and building relationships of trust among stakeholders.

UST named “Most Trusted Brand” of Reader’s Digest

READER’S Digest Asia has named UST as the Gold Winner of the “Most Trusted Brand” awards under the university category this year.

UST ranked first over University of the Philippines, which topped last year’s list. UST has been on the list since 2009.

The Trusted Brands Awards, which started in 1999, surveyed 8,000 consumers in the Philippines, Malaysia, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, and India through phone calls and postal mails last October.

The criteria were credibility, quality, value, understanding of consumer needs, innovation, and social responsibility.

Thomasians awarded most outstanding professionals

TWO THOMASIANS were named most outstanding professionals in the fields of medicine and occupational therapy by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC).

Maria Minerva Patawaran-Calimag, a professor from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, received the first Eric Nubla Excellence Award last June 22 during the 39th PRC anniversary celebration.

Meanwhile, Sally Jane Uy, an assistant professor from the College of Rehabilitation Sciences, was named most outstanding occupational therapist during the 39th Anniversary Celebration and Awarding of Outstanding Professionals at the Manila Hotel.

The PRC cited Calimag and Uy for their “exemplary achievements and exceptional professional competence with integrity” in the exercise of their professions.

Faculty of Pharmacy, Brunei university to collaborate on research

THE FACULTY of Pharmacy has partnered with Universiti Brunei Darussalam for research collaborations in biomedical science, medical technology, biochemistry, and pharmaceutical sciences.

The two universities plan to exchange faculty and students, engage in the pre-formulation and formulation of natural products and community immersions, and publish academic materials and research, after signing a memorandum of understanding.

Purchasing Office head appointed Vice Rector

NEWLY installed Rector Fr. Herminio Dagohoy, O.P. has appointed former purchasing office director Fr. Richard Ang, O.P. as the new vice rector of the University.

“I will give my full dedication to my new job and my assignment because he [Dagohoy] has entrusted that to me,” said Ang, who succeeded Fr. Pablo Tiong, O.P.

Ang served as faculty secretary of the UST Ecclesiastical Faculties, where he finished his Bachelor in Philosophy and Masteral in Sacred Theology. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1998. NIKKA LAVINIA G. VALENZUELA

Artlets alumna named outstanding student

A LEGAL Management alumna was named one of the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines (TOSP) in the National Capital Region (NCR) during ceremonies, at the PLDT Innolab in Mandaluyong last April 30.

Rochelle Anne Obleno, a cum laude graduate of the Faculty of Arts and Letters and recipient of the UST Benavides Award for Outstanding Achievement, received the TOSP recognition for her “academic excellence, leadership, and social responsibility.”

Of the 21 finalists, Obleno was the sole candidate from UST.

The TOSP program recognizes college students who have “excelled academically and made a change in their own communities, organizations, and fields of interest, while fulfilling the mission of nation-building in the digital age.”

Architecture alumni win in house design tilt

TWO THOMASIANS bagged the top prize in an intercollegiate house design contest in Mandaluyong last May 18.

The tandem of Architecture graduates Patrick Castañeda and John Michael Puache bested other teams and emerged as champion of this year’s Pag-ibig House Design Competition.

Castañeda and Puache’s entry titled “Systemized Adaptive Floating Edifice” featured a house made of buoyant materials, which can float up to 2.2 meters.

The contest, open to all third to fifth year architecture students in Metro Manila, Cavite, and Bulacan, required a full architectural design for a single-family, one-storey house with a maximum construction cost of P200,000.

CFAD alumna featured in UK art exhibit

WORKS of a Thomasian alumna were featured in an art exhibit in the United Kingdom that ran mid-April until the 30th.

Among the collections featured in PAC:K: Philippine Art Collective were that of Advertising Arts graduate Yveese Belen, which featured human figures with faceless oblong heads and thin, straight arms and legs, wearing loose and colorful clothes.

The works of another Filipino artist, Malcolm Mendones, were also showcased in the exhibit organized by London-based Filipino artists.

As a student, Belen received the Benavides Award for excellence in visual arts in 2001. She won the grand prize in the Art Petron national student art competition the same year.

UST Hospital gains ISO certification

UST Hospital obtained anew the coveted International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certification last April 18 for establishing a “quality management system.”

The ISO 9001:2000 accreditation, which will be effective for three years, pertains to an organization’s ability to meet customer needs.

It was granted by TÜV SÜD Asia Pacific, an outfit that handles product testing, inspection, and certification services, according to the hospital’s office for planning and quality management.

An ISO certification ensures customers of improved product quality and brand image, and provides an organization a competitive edge by offering access to worldwide markets.

CTHM sponsors wedding rites

THREE couples got married at the Santisimo Rosario Parish Church last Feb. 28, courtesy of the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management.

The newlyweds were Romeo Micarios and Zenaida Mendoza, Alfredo Tiangha and Wenilyn Libato, and Gericson Galicia and Ana Marie Abela. Micarios and Galicia are part of the University’s maintenance staff, while Tiangha is a security guard.

The triple wedding was a college outreach project. To qualify, at least one of the partners must be an employee of the University and the bride must not be pregnant at the time of the wedding, Community Development Coordinator Arnold Distor said.
