Thomasians win in essay tilt

FOUR Advertising students from the College of Fine Arts and Design bagged the top spots in the Magritte in 175 Words Art Appreciation Competition last July.

Advertising juniors Tracy Beverly Santuyo, Charleene Marzan, and Varsitarian Circle writer Florian Garcia, placed first, second, and third, respectively. While Hans Kristine Malang, also an Advertising junior, bagged the Special Prize.

ROTC proposes quota system

TO STEM the decreasing enrollment rate of the Reserved Officers Training Corps (ROTC) component of the National Service Training Program (NSTP), the UST-ROTC administration has proposed a quota system in the other components of the NSTP.

Army Technical Sgt. Christopher Chua, the UST-Department of Military Science and Tactics assistant commandant for administration, told the Varsitarian that the number of reservists in the National Capital Region-ROTC has greatly dwindled since the students were given the freedom to choose among the components of the NSTP.

Research shows teachers better than PCs

EDUCATIONAL technology, no matter how advance it is, cannot replace the traditional teaching atmosphere.

A group of researchers from the Teacher Education Department of the College of Education (Education) said educational technology is just a supplement to the teaching styles of the professors, but cannot replace the teachers themselves.

UST upgrades anti-virus softwares

Computer laboratories in every college will now be protected from devastating virus attacks by a server-based anti-virus system.

Mario Raagas, Santo Tomas e-Service Providers (Steps) computer engineer, said all computer laboratories in the University will now use the McAffee Intranet Defense Virus Scan and E-Policy Orchestrator (ePO) version 3.5, a software that facilitates a centralized anti-virus system through a server computer.

Former ‘V’ editor in chief named top reporter

A FORMER Varsitarian editor in chief was hailed reporter of the year by the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) last Aug. 12 at the Rizal Hall of the Malacañang Palace.

Philippine Daily Inquirer reporter Christian Esguerra was awarded for his balanced and reliable reporting on crime and corruption.

University tightens admission policy

QUALIFYING for UST is no longer as easy as it was four years ago as comparative data released by the Office for Student Admissions (OFAD) for the last five years revealed a decline in the number of students who have met the University standards.

From 2002 to 2005, only an average of 11,060 students yearly passed the UST Entrance Test (USTET), while an average of 22,024 examinees passed for 2000 and 2001. Data for the current school year were still unavailable as of press time.

High School senior dies in fire

she WANTED to be an architect, armed with a skilled drawing hand. But while a 30-minute fire claimed the life of UST High School senior Kathrina Kae Verdote in the morning of Aug. 24, her hopes and dreams have not turned into ashes.

“We decided to display her works and let the people see how great she was,” good friend Marian Cantor said of 15-year-old Kathrina, who was an artist in the Junior Thomasian Writer’s Guild and a member of Technical Artistic Skilled Circle. “She loved to draw and she’s good at it.”

‘Be agents of change,’ Prior Prov’l tells Thomasians

THE PRIOR Provincial, of the Dominicans, Fr. Edmund Nantes, O.P., urged Thomasians to become agents of change in light of the country’s deteriorating economic and political situation.

“Shine, illumine the darkest corners of the country,” he said in a mass in honor of St. Dominic de Guzman, founder of the Order of Preachers, last Aug. 5.

Nantes, who is the ex officio vice grand chancellor of UST, lamented that the nation seemed to go downhill despite having a number of Catholic educational institutions.

First Filipino bishop appointed by Benedict XVI is Thomasian

THE FIRST Filipino bishop to be appointed by new Pope Benedict XVI is a Thomasian, Msgr. Jose Rojas Jr., who was named auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Caceres last July. His episcopal ordination will be on Sept. 15.

In a letter to the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) last July 25, Archbishop Antonio Franco, papal nuncio to the Philippines, announced the appointment of Rojas.
