DOMINICAN preachers urged the faithful to follow Christ’s teachings of being one with others now that the world is in crisis due to the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.
In the annual “Siete Palabras” or reflections on the Seven Last Words of Christ at Santo Domingo Church in Quezon City on Good Friday, former UST vice rector Fr. Virgilio Ojoy, O.P. denounced “inhumane actions” like hoarding goods and the so-called “VIP testing” for the virus.
“Hindi nila sinunod ang mga itinuro ni Hesus na wag maging makasarili, na matutong magsakripisyo para sa iba. Kung atin lamang pakinggan ang mga turong ito ni Hesus at tularan ang kaniyang mga halimbawa, magiging ganap ang ating mga buhay bilang mga tao,” said Ojoy.
UST Santisimo Rosario Parish Priest Fr. Paul Reagan Talavera, O.P. emphasized the efforts of the Church to keep Christ’s presence amid social distancing.
“Nariyan ang… pag-iisip ng mga paraan para maabot ang mga taong nangangailangan at lumabas upang ilapit ang Diyos sa mga bahay-bahay sa pamamagitan ng mga sakramento at literal na pag-iikot ng banal na sakramento sa mga barangay at komunidad,” said Talavera.
Fr. John Stephen Besa, O.P. thanked the sacrifice of frontliners in caring for Covid-19 patients.
“Hindi natin alam ang eksaktong tawag sa damdamin ng namamatayan. Taos-puso ang ating pasasalamat sa magigiting nating frontliners. Maiparamdam nawa natin sa ating kapuwa ang pagmamahal na ibinigay ni Hesus,” Besa said.
‘Be Christ’s visible representative’
Former UST Rector Fr. Rolando de la Rosa, O.P. called on the faithful to feel Christ’s suffering and not just be “spectators” to His passion.
“As Christians… kapag inaalala natin ang paghihirap at pagpapakasakit ni Hesus, dapat nating maramdaman na tayo’y kabahagi ng paghihirap niya. Hindi lang tayo nanonood, dapat maranasan din natin kung paanong mamatay,” de la Rosa said reflecting on the sixth word.
Fr. Napoleon Sipalay, Jr., O.P., prior provincial of the Dominican Province of the Philippines, spoke of people’s thirst for God in their lives.
“Nawa’y tulungan nating punan ang pagkauhaw ng mga tao sa paligid natin… Sana mapukaw ang ating mga damdamin sa pagbalik sa Diyos na siyang nauuhaw sa pagbabalik natin,” Sipalay said.
Ojoy also reminded the people that holiness can be found by being faithful to their mission.
“Mga kapatid, kung gampanan lamang natin ang ating mga misyon sa ating buhay, magiging banal tayo. Magiging kaaya-aya ang ating mga buhay, at mga kaluluwa, hindi lamang sa mata ng tao, mas lalo na sa mata ng ating Diyos,” said Ojoy.
