POPE FRANCIS has appointed Fr. Subroto Boniface Gomes, who had completed his licentiate in philosophy at UST, as auxiliary bishop of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.

The announcement was made by the apostolic nuncio to Bangladesh, Archbishop Kevin Stuart Patrick Randall, on Feb. 15. Gomes succeeded Bishop Shorot Gomes.

Gomes took up his bachelor’s in philosophy and theology in Bengaluru and Dhaka, respectively, before studying at UST to obtain his philosophy licentiate.

He became a priest on April 16, 1990, and served as deputy parish priest at Holy Rosary Parish in Dhaka from 1990 to 1993.

From 1997 to 2007, Gomes taught at Notre Dame College of Dhaka and Holy Spirit Major Seminary in Dhaka. He served as the spiritual director of the latter from 2017 to 2018.

Gomes was the deputy secretary general of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Bangladesh from 2007 to 2015. He then served as the chancellor of the Archdiocese of Dhaka from 2018 to 2019.
