THE TEAM captain of the UST Lady Fencers brought home a gold medal in the Brunei Open Fencing Championship at the Indoor Stadium in Bandar Seri Begawan last Jan. 11.

Maylene Pailma, a legal management student, prevailed over fellow national team member Alleine Cortey of the University of the East, 15-8, in the women’s sabre category.

Lady Fencers Cherie Mañago and Precious Sapungan won bronze in the women’s sabre division.

In men’s play, Tiger Fencer Matthew Domantay bagged a bronze in the sabre competition.

Pailma and teammate Eileen de Guzman will not play in the next UAAP season to offset the number of graduating players. De Guzman is still recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Pailma said she would join tournaments outside of collegiate leagues instead.

“Even though I’m not gonna play this season, I will still train hard not just for myself but also for my teammates. And to make sure na hindi ako matatambay, I will still join competitions para mas mai-enhance pa to give pride to the UST community and to our country,” said Pailma.
