THE UST Male Fencers capped Day 3 of the UAAP Season 79 fencing tournament with a gold and a silver medal at the Quadricentennial Pavilion Friday.

A comeback from the men’s epee team highlighted UST’s day after Male Fencers team captain Noelito Jose finished off former Most Valuable Player Nathaniel Perez, 45-44, despite being down 38-43 in the championship game.

Jose capped his personal 7-1 run with the winning kneeling strike.

Jose, along with Jose Bernardino Arribas, Michael Duterte and Dennis Gascon, won the third gold for UST.

UST now has a 3-2-1 gold-silver-bronze medal tally.

“[Para manalo laban sa UE] kailangan ko kasi magkaroon ng confidence sa sarili ko. Walang mangyayari kung kakabahan ka lang. Nothing to lose naman ako [kasi lamang ang UE,] mahirap naman kung matalo ka nang walang ginawa,” Jose told the Varsitarian after the game.

UST’s men’s sabre team of Matthew Domantay, Mark Joseph Echaves, Bonn Pascual, and Angelo Ramos bowed to UE’s Christian Concepcion, Edberto Gonzales, Nathaniel Perez, and Malcolm Valena, 36-45, for silver.

UE has already secured its seventh straight championship with five golds, four silvers and four bronzes.

UST women’s squad failed to win any medal.

In junior’s play, the UST boys’ epee team and girls’ foil team took home two silver medals while the boys’ sabre team nabbed bronze.

UAAP fencing action will resume tomorrow at the same venue.
