UST bags 3 medals; Male Fencers assured of podium finish

The UST Tiger Fencers wrapped up Day 3 of the UAAP fencing championship with three medals Saturday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig.

The UST men’s epee team of Noelito Jose, Dennis Gascon and Rodolfo and Michael Duterte won gold for the second-straight year after trouncing UE’s Christian Concepcion, John Concepcion, Marlow Osayan and Samuel Tranquilan, 45-38.

Team captain Jose pulled away from a 37-36 lead with a personal 8-2 run capped by a throw hit on Osayan to ice the game.

The men’s sabre team of Matthew Domantay, Mark Joseph Echavez, John Pailma and Bonn Pascual bagged silver against UE’s Christian Concepcion, Tranquilan, Malcolm Valena and Jinro Villanueva in the finals, 24-45.

In women’s action, the foil team of Maricar Dizon, Joeli Figuracion, Sherlyn Jose and Marielle Peralta settled for bronze against UP’s Angelika Aleta, Hannah Hollero, Vanessa Manalo and Christianne Pascual in the semifinals, 18-45.

“Maganda ‘yung results ng laro. Kailangan namin pagtrabahuhan ‘yung women’s bukas at kailangan naming makuha ‘yung gold or silver sa men’s,” UST epee coach Arman Bernal said.

The Male Fencers currently trail at second place with 2-2-2 gold-silver-bronze medals behind UE’s 3-2-1.

The Female Fencers dropped to fifth place with two bronze medals.

The last day of UAAP fencing action will commence tomorrow, 8 a.m., at the same venue.
