A THOMASIAN filmmaker has been named to the US Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences tasked to vote in the Academy Awards.

Baby Ruth Villarama said being a member of the professional honorary organization meant championing diversity in Hollywood.

She said the invitation had “perfect timing” as it coincided with the commemoration of Philippine cinema’s 100th anniversary.

“To be included in the list of great men and women brings optimism to think that Hollywood is opening its doors to more diverse voices,” she told the Varsitarian.

The journalism alumna received critical acclaim for directing “Sunday Beauty Queen,” the first documentary film included in the Metro Manila Film Festival. It won Best Picture in 2016.

“I hope Hollywood is ready to look at the Philippines as the new treasure box for stories and talents,” Villarama said.

Joining Villarama in the roster of new academy members this year are Filipino filmmaker Ditsi Carolino, Lady Gaga and Spider-Man actor Tom Holland. Jade Veronique A. Yap
