UST RESERVED Officers Training Corps (ROTC) cadet officers have started handling and firing real guns.

They joined the First Shootfest Competition and Fellowship at the Marikina Sports Complex last Oct. 17, Corps Commander C/Maj. Theresa Altamirano told the Varsitarian.

“This is a good practice for us who will be joining the annual shooting competition and a good experience for the other officers who tried shooting for the first time,” said Altamirano, who has been participating in the annual ROTC shootfest for two years.

The cadet officers were taught how to fire .45 caliber pistols.

The shootfest, sponsored by the Golden Cross and Saber Alumni Association, served as an occasion for most of the officers to experience handling a gun for the first time and for some to practice for the annual ROTC competition this month at Fort Bonifacio.

Altamirano said the shootfest would help prepare the officers for their future role as reservists.

“As reservists, it is a must that they know how to fire a gun,” Altamirano said.

Meanwhile, Altamirano and Cadet Captain Joyce Anne de la Cruz, who won first place in the comprehensive exam in the regional summer camp training, topped the comprehensive exam for Military Science (MS) 42 and 32, respectively, of the regional advance ROTC training for officers at Fort Bonifacio.

The annual training, which lasted from Oct. 22 to 29, included lectures and drills to prepare the officers for the ROTC drill activities this semester. April Dawn Jennifer C. Adriatico
