THE UNIVERSITY registered notable performances in the professional licensure examinations for engineers last November and October.

Thomasian Bernard Anthony Marcial placed first over-all in the Civil Engineering (CE) board exams, posting a 98.95 per cent average.

UST dominated the CE exams in the 50 to 100 examinees category, as its passing rate surged from last year’s 88 per cent to 94 per cent this year.

Other Thomasians who also made it to the list of top ten examinees were: Lawrence Wong (2nd, 98.05 per cent), Anthony Hao Angdagco and Harold Herera, (7th, 96.50 per cent); Jennie Cortez (8th, 95.80 per cent), and Richard Salceda (10th, 95.45 per cent).

The national passing rate also increased from 34 per cent last year to 44.37 per cent this year after 2,065 of the 4,654 examinees passed the board exam.

CE department head Josefin de Alban said a key factor that helped improve UST’s performance was the fieldwork-like exposure they gave to CE students.

“Even if we have a modicum of professors with doctrate degrees, we always see to it that the students are exposed to the different civil engineering skills by giving them more hands-on activities,” De Alban said.

Also, the University remained on top in the Electrical and Communications Engineering (ECE) board exams as it placed first over-all in the 100 and above examinees category. UST’s passing rate had improved from 59 per cent last year to 73 per cent this year as 76 out of 120 Thomasians who took the exams passed. The national passing rate increased from 31.93 per cent last year to 36 per cent this year as 1,631 out of 4,513 passed the exam.
