These shameless congressmen! Despite very glaring evidence that their voracious lifestyle and appetite for pork barrel are the prime causes of the country’s fiscal and economic crises, they insist that the Philippines is poor because it is overpopulated. They refuse to recognize that the Philippines is poor because it has been mismanaged, corrupted and bled to death by rapacious politicians like them.

Some misguided sectors of the metropolitan media have branded these legislators “progressive.” This is the height of folly. Look at their surnames—Remulla, Joson, Antonino, Barbers, and Zubiri. These names represent the political dynasties that have made politics a business fiefdom and stranglehold; these names look at political posts as a birthright. If there’s one birth-control device we need, it’s a contraceptive pill against political dynasties.

Congressman Edsel Lagman a progressive? This lawmaker, after he was barred from running for a fourth term by the Constitution, changed districts—from Bicol to Quezon City, which thankfully rejected him—in order to remain a congressman! There must be something irresistible in Congress that drives people like Lagman to gluttonous heights. At the least, Lagman’s is a case of the serial Filipino politician, one with a voracious appetite for entitlement and the largesse and power that come with it. If there’s an abortifacient we need, it is one to stop serial politicians from feeding on the public coffers. Lagman and his fellow gluttons should be aborted.

As such, House Bill 3773 should be roundly condemned and opposed. In the guise of introducing so-called reproductive health care services, the bill seeks to control the fertility of women by providing them contraceptives with dangerous side effects. Some of these contraceptives are abortifacients that maim and murder the unborn.

It is in such a light that the Department of Health’ Ligtas Buntis should be opposed. DOH Secretary Manuel Dayrit said the program means “Safe Pregnancy.” That is hogwash. The program should be taken in the context of previous DOH programs against diseases, such as Ligtas Tigdas. Thus, the new program paints pregnancy as a disease that should be corrected by contraceptives. Therefore, Ligtas Buntis is nothing but another version of HB 3773. The fact that it is biased for “reproductive health” and contraceptives should show that it is nothing but a birth-control measure. It’s a program that glosses over maternal health.

To be sure, a woman’s health is more than her pregnancy. But the program’s bias “for” pregnancy should show that it is nothing but an excuse to dispense contraceptives. Dayrit said that women should space their births, and that is what Ligtas Buntis ensures. The statement itself reveals a bias for the reproductive aspect of women and contraceptive means to check fertility. A women’s health does not depend alone on birth-spacing. It is the sum of many parts, one of them being fertility.

The inordinate focus of both the House bill and the DOH program on fertility should show that they are nothing but measures to check “overpopulation,” a thesis that has been exposed a myth as early as the 18th century and reaffirmed recently even by Nobel-winning scientists. That inordinate focus is particularly worrisome because while Lagman and his contraceptive cohorts warn that the “galloping” population of the country is growing at 2.36% annually, the actual rate based on data by the National Statistics Office and the United Nations is only anywhere between 1.6% and 1.9%. The UN, in fact, has projected a Philippine population growth rate of 1.84% between 2000-2005. So what’s the scientific basis of Lagman et al in justifying their draconian measure to curb population growth? It can be summed up in one word: voodoo.

Needless pre-need hassle

Despite statistics giving the lie to their doomsday scenario, Lagman and the league of extraordinarily gluttonous politicians still want to drastically curb the population through contraceptive means. They want to contracept the Philippine race to extinction. So whose interest are they serving? Whose else but that of the multi-million transnational contraceptive-condom complex of greedy businessmen, radical feminists, sex traffickers, and abortion industrialists!

All Thomasians and the rest of the Philippine population should teach these ravenous nincompoops in Congress a lesson. Let’s contracept the contraceptive clowns of Congress!
