THE COLLEGE of Education Grade School (CE-GS) will implement Makabayan this school year, the controversial new basic education curriculum of the education department.

Makabayan will integrate the subjects Sibika at Kultura: Heograpiya, Kasaysayan at Sibika (SK:HKS), Musika, Sining, at Edukasyon sa Pagpapalakas ng Katawan (MSEP), Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan (EPP), and Edukasyon sa Kagandahang-Asal at Wastong Pag-uugali (EKAWP).

According to Thelma Angeles, subject coordinator for Sibika at Kultura, the Department of Education (DepEd) requires public schools to implement the new curriculum this school year. Private schools have the option to implement it next year.

The new curriculum will focus on nationalism, patriotism, and environmental, political and global awareness.

However, only grades one and two pupils will take the new curriculum because it is still experimental and will be carried out gradually, she added.

“Since this is a laboratory school, we have to implement it immediately,” Angeles said.

CE-GS Subject Coordinators will add an hour for Makabayan. This means 40 minutes for the core subject SK:HKS and 20 minutes for MSEP.

Angeles also said that pupils will have a longer time in school because with the new curriculum, they (subject coordinators) would have to follow the strict time.

Next year, coordinators said they plan to include grades three and four in the new curriculum.

Science, however, was removed from the list of subjects for grades one and two. Ma. Cristina S. Lavapie
