POPE JOHN Paul II celebrated his 82nd birthday last May 18.

Amid press speculations of his resignation, the Pope assured millions of Catholics throughout the world that he will continue with fidelity the ministry that the Lord has entrusted to him.

Even before his birthday, thousands of pilgrims have already flocked to St. Peter’s Square to offer their greetings and warm wishes for the Holy Father.

At his birthday celebration, 7,000 students from the Christian Brothers Schools rendered a birthday song for the Pope at the Vatican Audience Hall.

The Pope was also advised to deliver the most important parts of his address so as to conserve his energies.

One of the special presents that the Pontiff received was a one-meter high wooden moose from Mel Lastman, mayor of Toronto, which he said signified the Pope’s strength, beauty, and stamina.

Spectators remarked that the Pope appeared weary but in good spirits as the celebration went on.

After months of preparation, the Pope is now ready to conduct international visits.

His first stop will be at Bulgaria and Azerbaijan on May 22 to 26.

The Pope is scheduled to leave for Toronto, Canada for the World Youth Day in July. After that, he is also scheduled to leave for Guatemala, Mexico and Poland. Anna Rachelle S. Ariola with reports from the Zenit News Service
