April 29, 2016, 1:33p.m. – FORMER Chief Justice Renato Corona, who finished his law doctorate in UST, passed away earlier today, April 29, after cardiac arrest. He was 67.

The National Transformation Council, to which Corona belonged, confirmed Corona’s death at 1:48 a.m. today through a Facebook post.

The Supreme Court Public Information Office, through Twitter, said Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno had ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in all courts, nationwide to mourn Corona’s death.

Corona obtained his doctor of civil law degree from UST in 2011, with a general weighted average of 1.04.  He finished his bachelor of laws at Ateneo de Manila in 1974.

On May 12, 2012, then President Gloria-Macapagal Arroyo appointed Corona as associate justice of the Supreme Court. He became chief justice in 2010.

Corona is the first member of the High Tribunal to be impeached and dismissed. He was impeached by the House of Representatives on Dec. 12, 2011. In May 2012, the Senate, as the impeachment court, found him guilty of betraying public trust and violating the Constitution for supposedly hiding his assets.

The viewing of Corona’s remains will start on Saturday, April 30, at the Heritage Park in Taguig. Alhex Adrea M. Peralta
