A UST professor’s research on the Euphorbia hirta or asthma plant won the 2017 National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) Achievement Award for Research in Pharmacy last March 22 at the Philippine International Convention Center.

Jovencio Apostol of the Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences was awarded for his discovery of the effects of Euphorbia hirta on platelet function and morphology.

Euphorbia hirta is a pantropical weed widely used as a medicinal herb.

Apostol’s research also included the vascular pharmacology of natural products in isolated tissue.

NRCP is an organization composed of Filipino scientists and researchers. It has 13 scientific divisions focusing on a particular field of science, with each division choosing a recipient of the prestigious award from a pool of scientists.
