Thomasian researcher bags national research award

UST RESEARCH Center for Culture, Arts and Humanities Director Joyce Arriola received the 2018 National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) achievement award in humanities at the Philippine International Convention Center on March 11.

She was given the recognition for being “an esteemed academic leader in promoting Philippine literary education, indigenous culture and Filipino discourse.”

“To be an awardee this year is an honor and privilege [as] I represent the ‘human’ side of new knowledge,” Arriola told the Varsitarian in an online interview.

“The NRCP Achievement Award… is a testament that the world of the academe and of civil society continues to listen to diverse voices and perspectives,” she added.

The award was given during the 86th general assembly and annual scientific conference of the council.

Arriola has been a member of the Executive Council of the National Committee for Literary Arts of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts since January 2018.

She became a member of the Commission on Higher Education’s Technical Committee for Literature in 2011.

Arriola won the National Book Award for Film/Film Criticism in 2007 for her work titled “Postmodern Filming of Literature: Sources, Contexts and Adaptations.”

She earned her masters and doctorate degrees in literature in the University in 1995 and 2003, respectively. Arriola was  a recipient of the Outstanding Alumni Award in 2014.
