WITH a 5-6-2 win-loss-draw card in the elimination round of Ang Liga Football Cup, the UST Golden Booters are fighting it out for a semifinals slot.

“Kayang-kaya pa naman (namin) makapasok sa semis. Tiwala naman ako sa teammates ko na kaya naming manalo basta gumawa lang lahat,” team captain Armand Esteban said.

UST, now at fifth place, scored an easy victory against reigning UAAP champion Ateneo de Manila University, which was a no-show last Nov. 18 at the UST Football Field. The win-by-default gave UST a 3-0 victory.

THIRTEEN Thomasian student-athletes and two coaches join the Philippine contingent in the 23rd Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) from Nov. 27 to Dec. 5.

“This is an indication that UST’s sports program can produce national-caliber athletes,” IPEA Athletics moderator Felix Michael Silbor said of UST’s involvement in the biennial meet.

UST has always been well represented in the regional meet.

IT IS unsurprising why Coach Sandy Baredo has humble expectations for his squad in Season 68. With a dozen rookies and only four seniors in his team, the Lady Batters coach has yet to adjust to a number of things, especially stepping into the shoes of his six departed veterans.

“Wala akong goal ngayon. Maglalaro lang muna kami sa UAAP,” Lady Batters head coach Sandy Baredo said calmly, but with an evident undertone of frustration in his voice.

THROUGH the UAAP basketball coverage of Studio 23, an arm of the network giant ABS-CBN, collegiate basketballs popularity has grown tremendously, surpassing even the Philippine Basketball Association, Asias oldest professional basketball league, in television ratings.

“UAAP is now more popular than the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). Wala na eh, talo na natin ang PBA sa ratings,” Ricardo Matibag, UAAP board treasurer and Adamson University representative said.

But the UAAP is not like the PBA.

THE COLLEGE of Commerce captured its second consecutive Judo overall championship in the fourth Thomasian Goodwill Games last Sept. 26 at the UST Gym.

The Commerce women’s team, which topped its division, proved to be its college’s real heavyweights, accounting for seven of the squad’s 11 medals.

THE UST Golden Booters hope to revive their semifinals chances after back-to-back victories against University of the East (UE) and University of the Philippines (UP) in the Ang Liga Football Cup second elimination round.

The two-time Ang Liga bridesmaids are slowly regaining their winning form, toting a slightly improved 4-5-2 win-loss-draw card, good for fifth.

UST shuts UP

UST scraped a narrow victory against UP, 1-0, last Sept. 30 at the UST Football field.

THE UST Female Judokas won two golds and a silver medal in the NCR Ranking Championships last Sept. 17 at the AMA Computer University Gym.

Sophomores Mary Jayne Haylo and Joana de Castro dominated the -70 kg and -57 kg divisions. Meanwhile, junior judoka Vanessa Roa settled for a bridesmaid finish against University of the Philippines’ (UP) Michelle de Ocampo in the -52 kg division.

A CHAMPIONSHIP is within reach for the UST Female Booters after they had won three straight games, including a victory against defending champion University of the Philippines (UP), to earn a finals seat alongside De La Salle University (La Salle) in the Metro Manila Football Girls Association (MMGFA).

Coach Jade Bejemino’s squad is tied with La Salle in first place with a 5-1-1 win-loss-draw card. The Taft-based booters gave the España-based booters their lone defeat, but Bejemino believes that his team can still win the crown.

Woodpushers won their first title, while the Female Tiger Sharks succeeded in their title-retention bid.

The Tiger Spikers, after leading the elimination round, succumbed to defending champion Far Eastern University. The Male Tankers also finished second.

The Male Woodpushers dropped to third place, while Coach August Santamarias Lady Spikers were fourth.

Like in previous seasons, the basketball teams performances left much to be desired. The Growling Tigers and Tigresses finished sixth.

Tigers at their best

IT WAS a glorious UAAP season for the UST Senior Table Tennis teams.

The Male Paddlers captured a historic fourth straight title, while the Female Paddlers were crowned queen of the table courts after being bridesmaids last season.

Paddlers Jimboy Baring and Princess Paña capped off the momentous occasion by winning the Most Valuable Player awards.

Head coach Henberd Ortalla owed the twin victories to the teams’ perseverance and commitment.
