Woodpushers stay on course

THE UST Male Woodpushers climbed the upper half of the charts after scoring a breezy 3.5-0.5 win over National University (NU) in the ongoing UAAP Chess Tournament last August 30 at the Thomas Aquinas Research Center.

The victory catapulted the Male Woodpushers’ to joint second place with erstwhile league-leaders Far Eastern University. Both teams now sport identical 16.5-point aggregates at the end of the first round.

Board one contender Vic Villanueva outclassed NU’s Donn Fabian in 30 moves while Male Woodpushers Gerald Ferriol (board three) and Jude Fronda (board four) extracted the full point against Gerry Nudalo and Willard Turda, respectively. UST’s Patrick Florendo fell short of completing a sweep following a draw with Christian Cagada.

There are four boards in a match. A win in one board scores a point while a draw grants 0.5.

UST Tennisters falter in off-season tilt

THE UST Male Tennisters fell short of a back-to-back title romp after wilting before a powerhouse De La Salle University crew, 2-0, in the finals of the 2008 Milo Interschool Tennis Tournament last August 23 at the Phil-am Homes Tennis Club in Quezon City.

Up against a heavy-hitting Korean and one of the Philippines’ top local netters, the Male Tennisters succumbed to pressure at every turn, eventually relinquishing the title they won via an all-UST finale last year.

Season 70 Rookie of the Year Raymond Villarete hastened UST’s championship meltdown, yielding the first singles battle to Korean Soo-han Chung in the tie-breaker, 8-7 (1).

Unable to shake-off a choppy forehand early in the match, Villarete found himself staring at a 1-4 deficit, but later knotted the count at five-apiece, thanks to a couple of nifty placements which repeatedly caught Chung off-balanced at mid-court.

Tiger Cubs vie for last semis berth

IT ALL boils down to the last game of the eliminations.

Despite hacking out a close 78-74 win against the National University (NU) Bullpups, the UST Tiger Cubs’ Season 71 future remains bleak unless they dispatch the Far Eastern University (FEU) Baby Tamaraws on September 6.

But that would depend on how the Tiger Cubs would respond, hopefully with the sense of urgency their collegiate counterparts lacked in the run-up to their own Final Four bid.

“After our earlier loss, we really need the strength and the luck to go into the final four even if the chances are really slim,” coach Allan Ascue said after the Tiger Cubs repulsed the Bullpups last August 30 at the Ateneo Blue Eagle gym. “Tagilid, talagang tagilid.”

The Tiger Cubs are currently running fifth with a 7-6 win-loss record, behind the fourth-seeded Adamson University Baby Falcons, which sport an 8-5 card.

Tiger Paddlers go for repeat

IF COACH Henberd Ortalla’s honest assessment is correct, the UST Paddlers are likely to fill up only half of the championship glass this season.

And for numerically sound reasons. The UST veteran count reads: Tiger Paddlers – 5, Lady Paddlers – 3. The rookies? Tiger Paddlers – 3, Lady Paddlers – 3.

Juggling these figures in mind, Ortalla himself openly admitted that the Tiger Paddlers, despite losing Season 70 MVP Reygea Rosales to graduation, are still heavily favored to retain the title they wrested from archrival Far Eastern University (FEU) last year when the UAAP table tennis hostilities unfurl this month.

“The Tigers’ hunger for victory did not fade after claiming last year’s championship crown,” Ortalla told the Varsitarian. “Even more, our new sets of players are rookies who want to experience how it feels to be a champion.”
