Central Library sets up heritage section

THE UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas Central Library is creating a section that will contain books and journals documenting the evolution of the country.

Prefect of Libraries Fr. Angel Aparicio, O.P. said UST, the oldest university in the Philippines and a witness to its growth, has the responsibility to preserve documents relating to the nation’s history.

“It is not just to keep all books, but to preserve the memory of a nation,” Fr. Aparicio said.

Med alumni donate US $75,000

The University of Santo Tomas Medical Alumni Association in America (USTMAAA) has donated $75,000 to the UST Hospital (USTH) and Faculty of Medicine and Surgery (Medicine).

USTMAAA has targeted an endowment fund of $2 million for the activities of the association. It could donate the fund’s interest to the University through its financial arm, the USTMAAA Foundation.

According to Rector Fr. Tamerlane Lana, O.P., this year, the association of Thomasian doctors built up an endowment fund worth $2.5 million, surpassing its target worth $2 million.

Let me count the ways

TO ANY student who has an aversion to reading, literature is always a boring subject, dealing only with incomprehensible metaphors, dead authors, and making sense of seemingly senseless works.

Hence, more than others, teachers of literature face the challenge of bringing the subject closer to students and making them understand literary pieces and their ability to record reality and even transcend it.

Lana sets targets for last year of rectorship

FATHER Tamerlane Lana, O.P., in the final stretch of his second term as UST Rector, wants to focus on raising the Thomasian education standards and venturing into expansion and infrastructure projects before he leaves office next year.

Lana refers to the measures in making Vision 2011 possible. When Lana first assumed office in 1998, he launched the long-term plan that will aid the University to become “a center of academic excellence, a master in research in the sciences, and a leader of community development in Asia in 2011.”

Wika at Gunita

On nat’l scandals, Thomasians advised to use reason, vigilance

AMID the illegal gambling and wiretapping scandals hounding the Macapagal-Arroyo administration, Rector Fr. Tamerlane Lana, O.P. called on Thomasians to use reason, cautioning against being easily swayed by public opinion.

“Keep an open mind, try to be vigilant and reflect deeper on the meaning of the events happening,” the Rector said. “Use reason and give yourself time to really see the truth.”

Rector to faculty: Motivate students

RECTOR Fr. Tamerlane Lana, O.P. urged University professors to transform students into better citizens and mold righteous leaders through education during the Mass of the Holy Spirit last June 14 at the UST Chapel.

“There seems to be a simplistic solution in the complicated problems of our country and it is in education,” he said.

For The Love of Legends

THE RE-TELLING of old stories is a delightful, staple practice of writers. But to some, it is an obsession, a mission.

For those who enjoy the lush, full-bodied sensuality of J. Neil C. Garcia’s poetry, Myths and Metaphors (UST Publishing House, 2002) lets one into the poet’s fondness of re-telling legends through the intricate art of poetry.

A working scholar’s sacrifice

“Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.” - Deuteronomy 31:6

NOWADAYS, education is very expensive. And with the current due economic situation of the country, a scholarship grant is the answer to students who cannot afford education. Although every student has his own story to tell, all scholarship applications boil down to financial shortage.
