A zest for learning

I’VE always liked the book “Hope for the Butterflies.” It talks about the power of transformation and discovering one’s potential to become someone great, to fly high and make a difference in helping flowers survive.

Butterflies belong to the family Lepidoptera, and their wings do not get wet even in the rain. These creatures are like colorful angels that teaches me a valuable lessons in life.

BENEATH the canopy of stars and the first quarter moon, I pledged that “I am a Thomasian and will remain as one forever.”

With more than 5,000 other aspiring graduates as my witnesses, I know I am bound to fulfill my vow.

It felt strangely melancholic to be in the baccalaureate mass. A number of times, I had to purse my lips as I held back tears. I guess I still did not want to admit that time had gained on me again and four years were finally over.

The attitude

Does a school’s name have a bearing in job hiring? Have UST, UP, La Salle, and Ateneo become brands?

A school’s name can really ring a bell. As Thomasians, we are really quite fortunate to be bearers of the name UST. Admittedly, it is an added badge in the game of job seeking.

Enrolling in UST is a form of portfolio investment and graduating from this institution is a form of profit sharing. All students are one way or another stockholders, and if the stocks are performing and well-managed, they earn big profits.

Our money’s worth

IT DOESN’T take psychic abilities or a degree in paranormal studies to predict how the school year will end. One only needs to have a two-year residency in the University to foretell that by February or March of the current school year, a tuition increase will be in the offing.

The tuition increase has become a perennial routine for the University’s administration and they are showing no signs of breaking this habit just yet. For the past six years, UST has been steadily increasing its tuition by an average of 10 percent per school year.

Manila to host World Meeting of Families

THE STAGE is being set for a third Philippine visit of Pope John Paul II as Manila has been chosen to host the 4th World Meeting of Families next year.

The Holy Father came to the Philippines in 1981 for the beatification of Lorenzo Ruiz and in 1995 for the celebration of the 10th World Youth Day. He has chosen Manila as the venue for the next World Meeting of Families on Jan. 23 to 26, 2003.

Pope to name new saints

POPE John Paul II is setting a record his successors will find hard to beat.

This year, he is set to canonize nine candidates for sainthood, adding to the 456 he has canonized over his 23-year papacy.

In a public consistory last Feb. 26, the Holy Father announced the schedule of canonizations, which include that of Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer, founder of the Opus Dei; Pio de Pietrelcina, the Franciscan Capuchin friar who received the stigmata; and Juan Diego Cuauhlatoatzin, the visionary of Guadalupe.

Reporting the faith

Throughout the years, the media have played an important role in shaping the minds of people. They have made an impact on almost every aspect of society. Recognizing the media’s power, the Catholic Church has been getting more assertive in imparting Catholic tenets and spreading the gospel through journalism.

Recognizing the role of journalism in the ministry of the Church, the UST Journalism Society organized the first-ever National Catholic Journalism Forum last Feb. 25 at the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex.

Out of the shadows

“Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young, but be an example for the believers in your speech, your conduct, your love, faith, and purity.” — I Timothy 4:12

SOMETIMES, when our elders give opinions that clash with ours, we find it very to reason out and tell them they are wrong out of respect for them. And when we do speak up, we get pounded by a hail of reprimands and sometimes hurtful words, or are simply ordered to shut up. They usually say, “You are still young, listen to us first.”
