Prenatal

She must try to simplify you

because there is a need to,

because she needs to fit you

into a form, like this poem for instance:

of folded images reduced into inch-thick

verses of hand-me-down cloth diapers

yellowed either by dust or debris

unwashed from her sister’s

three-year-old; of mango slices

dipped in salt every afternoon at four,

while the ice cream man goes by

and her tongue moistens for sweets

and more; of the hazy, sudden

Kairalang moral

Toward the future, a job cut out for graduates

WE MUST move on.
Graduation is one of the most celebrated moments in our life. Yet this marching-to-the-stage-to-receive-the-diploma thing gives us anxieties and uncertainties.
The diploma is nothing but a piece of paper, or so we thought. Yes, it can be our ticket to a bright future. However, it has little to do with our future success. It will all boil down to what we have learned through these years. The next few months will be a test of our character. What are we really made of?

Golden Memories

What is the most memorable place in UST?

“Benavides Park. I like the ambiance and the lights during Christmas.”
- Marichelle Balay, Tourism, College of Education

“Sa mga benches in front of the UST chapel. ‘Yun kasi ang tambayan ng barkada kapag walang ginagawa at kapag nagre-relax after exams.”
- Hehersonne Reyes, Faculty of Pharmacy

Celebrities celebrate the faith

CELEBRITIES hold sway in all areas of life. This is true not only in politics and entertainment, but also in religion.

Faithful to their vocation as “role models,” some of today’s most popular personalities stand up for their faith, unpopular it may be. Despite the demands of their career and the temptations of their trade, these celebrities do not only express their Catholic beliefs, but live them without pretense.

UST backtracks on aboliton of Central Seminary Philosophy department

IF THE University administration would have its way, it would apply a practical solution to a practical problem: it would phase out the Philosophy department of the UST Central Seminary (USTCS) due to the dwindling number of students. But the illustrious alumni of the oldest school of Philosophy in Asia would not hear of it. They believe the department, which houses young student-residents who are in one of UST’s Centers of Excellence, deserves another lease on life.

Stigma of a wrong decision

GENDER Reassignment Surgery (GRS) or “sex change” has become a major concern among physicians today due to the multifaceted issues this growing industry involves. In the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery’s 12th Postgraduate Course in Bioethics last Feb. 5 at the Continuing Medical Education Auditorium, physicians discussed the psychological, physical, and bioethical implications of GRS, as well as transsexualism and homosexuality.

The fear factor

PEOPLE who start feeling dizzy, frazzled, and nervous the moment they step into an elevator are most of the time mistaken to be weird. They feel their heart beat faster and their hands become cold and clammy as they witness the steel doors slowly close the gap between their feet and the ground. As much as possible, these people will prefer the long and tiresome stairs instead.

Archbishop launches pro-poor program

MANILA Archbishop Gaudencio Rosales launched the nationwide charity foundation called “Pondong Batangan” to aid the country’s poor during the 10th Pope Leo XIII Lecture Symposium at the Medicine Auditorium last Feb. 2.

The name of the project was inspired by Rosales’ favorite Batangueño proverb: “Anumang magaling, kahit maliit, basta’t malimit ay patungong langit.”
