COPIES of the revised Code of Standards of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) were distributed during the recent meeting of the Philippine Association of Communication Educators (PACE), in a move to emphasize media ethics in communication schools.

The meeting, held in coordination with the Department of Communication and Media Studies of the Faculty of Arts and Letters at St. Raymund’s building last February 29, gathered professors from Miriam College, University of the Philippines-Diliman, University of the Philippines-Los Baños, St. Scholastica’s College, Ateneo de Manila University, and UST.

Representing UST were Prof. Jose Arsenio Salandanan, chairman of the Department of Communication and Media Studies, and Prof. Joyce Arriola, head of the Center for Intercultural Studies.

“The revision of the KBP Code of Standards is a welcome development. It has been a long while since we had a revision–it’s about time,” Salandanan told the Varsitarian.

Arts and Letters Dean Armando De Jesus said the revised standards will not only benefit faculty members, but students as well, as they will become aware of the strict standards required by the profession.

“If we really expect the renewal of our society, therefore, we need to go back to our values,” said De Jesus.

Ateneo professor Chi-chi Robles, PACE president, said the discussion of media ethics is highly appropriate when students, faculty members, and media practitioners are gathered.

“Together, media and education can make a formidable force as agents of change in a society like ours –a society that needs healing and reform,” Robles said.

Meanwhile, KBP president Maloli K. Espinosa said the distribution of the copies was a “renewal of vows” between the academe and media practitioners.

“We hope that the copies will serve as the bible of the students, faculty members, and practitioners,” said Espinosa, adding that the broadcast industry will never be successful without the help of the academe and the students. With reports from Kristine Jane R. Liu
