23 April 2014, 5:25 p.m. – KRISTINE Siapoc exploded for 27 points as she powered the Tigresses to a 73-57 victory over the Centro Escolar University (CEU) Lady Scorpions in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at the Arena in San Juan Wednesday afternoon.
Siapoc, who missed the last UAAP season due to a knee injury, connected on eight three-pointers to anchor the Tigresses to their first win in the preseason tournament.
The Lady Scorpions ignited a 10-0 run midway through the second quarter after capitalizing on UST’s four-straight misses to trim the deficit to three, 32-35.
Siapoc ended the drought for the Tigresses after draining two consecutive three-point shots, including a buzzer-beating basket, to cap off the first half with a 41-32 lead for the España cagebelles.
UST displayed a stifling defense on CEU’s center Shaddy Ogunsamuyen, who only finished with 13 markers on a 5-of-12 field goal shooting.
CEU controlled the boards with 51 rebounds against UST’s 38 but was only 1 of 20 from beyond the arc.
Apet Pontejos chipped in 16 points for the Lady Scorpions.
“Sabi ko sa kanila, i-control lang nila yung bigman (Ogunsamuyen) ng CEU kasi sa kanya sumusunod yung apat,” coach Chris Cantonjos said.
The Tigresses will next see action on April 25, 2:15 p.m. against Adamson University at the same venue. Delfin Ray M. Dioquino
