A TEAM from the Thomasian Cable Television (Tomcat) won this year’s Hoso Bunka Foundation Prize for its documentary “Edukasyon: Poverty and Education: In Depth: Episode-1” in the Japan Prize International Educational Program contest last Nov. 4 in Tokyo, Japan.

The Japan Prize International has been recognizing educational children’s programs produced by independent producers and television networks around the world since 1965.

The Hoso Bunka Foundation Prize is awarded to education-oriented videos.

According to Tomcat member Micheal Dan Freo, the documentary shows a poor boy struggling to have basic education while supporting his family. The video was was aired in UST last Aug. 28.

According to UST Education Technology Center officer Rowena Cantuba, only two entries were pre-selected from the Philippines: ABS-CBN’s Epol/Apol and Tomcat’s entry.

“This is the first time a Philippine entry won the award. And we competed against major television networks,” Cantuba said.

Major international television networks such as CNN from the United States, BBC from Great Britain, and local television networks like ABS-CBN and GMA-7 participated in the event.
