LIFE is unpredictable, we will never know what comes our way but still some try to predict the unpredictable. The daily horoscope, palm reading and tarot-card reading are just some of the ways that allegedly reveal the future.

Every time I pass by the famous Quiapo church. And the number of fortune tellers or “manghuhula” there has never failed to amaze me For as low as P50. People go to them to ask about their futures, or consult about decisions to choose in their respective lives. The Fortune-tellers have been there for a long time, decades probably. It just shows how superstitious Filipinos are.

In this era where technology is the name of the game, it is quite amazing that these superstitions have even invaded our trendy gadgets. From time to time horoscope updates are being sent to your cellphone’s inbox, and the internet is full of discussions on prophecies.

I remember one time while watching TV. A talkshow invited a fortune-teller for their annual predictions for the year ahead. one of the TV host asked, “Ano pla ang magiging kapalaran ng show namin at paano naman ang kalaban namin sa kabilang station?” The fortune-teller answered readily magiging maganda ang takbo ng show na to at tataas pa ang ratings”. I just smiled and said to myself, why will she say negative things to the show anyway? If she does so she might not guest the show again next year. Even the other shows fortune-teller promised a good performance for their show. And what irritated me was their predictions were very safe and with no exact message in it. That is how their predictions are fulfilled.

It has become a part of Filipino culture to seek “guidance” from these self-proclaimed “gifted” people, but what really bothers me is that Filipinos tend to rely on them too much as if though the world would end without them. Why are we allowing these false prophecies to rule our lives? Is it because were’ losing our faith in God? Or is it because we no longer believe that our government can solve the present problems of every unfortunate Filipino?

Despite everything that’s happening to the country we should remain optimistic. Let us not waste our time and money for these things. Let us not rely on them to answer our tribulations in life, we should work for the best and free ourselves from the prison that these prophecies create.

No one can predict the future, but we have a choice, and we can make things better. We only have to work hard, believe and persevere amid trials that we face. So let’s live our life to the fullest without limits and no holds barred. We are the architects of our lives.
