SOME 100 Civil Engineering (CE) seniors of the Faculty of Engineering (Engineering) helped build houses for the residents of the fire-torn Bataan Shipyard and Engineering Corporation compound (Baseco) in Tondo last Aug. 23 to 27, as part of their department’s outreach program.

According to CE department head Engr. Peter Lim, the outreach program is in coordination with Gawad Kalinga (GK), a non-government charity organization.

“Immersion din ito ng mga estudyante sa industry ng profession na pinapasukan nila,” he added.

“Malaking bagay (para sa amin) ang mga estudyanteng tumutulong,” said Baseco reconstruction overseer Pablito Sevillano.

Arch. Bien Padua, GK Baseco architect, said there were already 208 housing units built since they started last February.

“Napapabilis ang trabaho namin (dahil sa mga volunteers),” he added.

Padua said the whole process of providing houses for the 2,500 families may take three years, but 500 units are already expected to be finished by December.

Other companies, non-government organizations, foreign governments and personal donors aid the residents of Baseco by providing them with construction materials, while volunteer groups especially from various schools help build the houses with the residents.
