For the second consecutive year, a Faculty of Pharmacy student placed first in the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) online stock trading tournament last February.

Medical Technology senior Mark Lester Sy, who topped the tournament’s individual category, said the repeat victory surprised him.

“I didn’t expect to win again,” Sy said. “In fact, mababa pa nga yung score ko nung first month.”

Suffering an all-time low of about 80 points in the first month, Sy’s portfolio increased by 96.28 points from the start-up point of P200,000 to P296,835.54 worth of virtual money, trading 150 times, mostly on oil stocks, throughout the tournament period.

According to Sy, he plans to pursue Medicine and invest his savings in the stock market.

“Since it was a simulation game, the tournament served as practice of the trading theories I learned,” Sy said.

Meanwhile, the UST team, composed of Sy and fellow Med Tech seniors Albert Soliven, Madeline Yu, Johnson See, and Dianne Sia, placed fourth in the tournament’s team category.

University of the Philippines-Diliman, Far Eastern University, and De la Salle University-Dasmariñas, placed first, second, and third respectively.

The tournament, open to student-members of the Philippine Association of Collegiate Schools of Business nationwide, is a simulation of stock market trading, with real-time prices, and done during actual trading hours of 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Transactions were done online from January to February.

The tournament aimed at educating college students on the stock market.

Sy received a Nokia 6600 cellular phone, while the UST team got a cash prize of P20,000 . The awarding ceremony was held last Feb. 28 at the PSE Tektite Trading Floor in Ortigas Center.
