SIMULA ngayon, taunan na ang debarment sa Faculty of Civil Law.
Ginawa ito upang mabigyan ng mas mahabang panahong maghanap ng lilipatan ang mga estudyanteng nagkabagsak ng mga asignaturang katumbas ng siyam na yunit.
“[We imposed the annual debarment] to enable students to look for another school where they can transfer in case they do not meet the required average in the Faculty,” ani Dean Nilo Divina ng Faculty of Civil Law. “Based on previous experiences, if you do the semestral debarment, there is not much time to look for another school considering that there is one or two weeks before the next semester.”
Susunod pa rin ang Civil Law sa patakaran ng UST na ang estudyante ay “debarred” kapag nagkabagsak ng siyam na yunit.
“If they want to take the second semester and attend some subjects [they can do so]. And if they pass the subject, it will be credited. But they will be debarred at the end of the year,” ani Divina.
Maaring tumaas ang nakukuhang matrikula sa hindi pagbawas sa mga estudyante ng Civil Law pagkatapos ng unang semestre dahil sa bagong patakaran. Ngunit ayon kay Divina, ang pagbabagong ito ay hindi para sa dahilang iyon.
“I don’t think of it that way. It’s more of a giving our faculty members more time to deliberate whether or not students deserve to go to the next year level or should be asked to consider another school,” aniya.
Paliwanag ni Divina, mabibigyan din nito nang mahabang deliberasyon ang mga propesor para sa mga estudyanteng hindi nakamit ang kinakailangang Quotient Point Index (QPI) para makatuntong sa susunod na antas.
“It may happen that one or two professors may give a student a very poor grade, such that they were not able to meet the QPI but if in the deliberation it turns out that this student is very good in this particular subject or subjects then we can compare notes and we will decide collectively whether a student will be debarred,” ani Divina.
Taun-taon, nakakatanggap ang Civil Law ng humigit kumulang 300 na freshmen ngunit nasa 100 lang ang nakakaabot sa ikaapat na taon.
Iskolars ng Fakultad
Upang mahikayat ang mga pinakamagagaling na estudyante, dinoble pa ang allowance sa libro ng mga iskolar ng Civil Law. Hiwalay ito sa scholarship grant na ipinapagkaloob ng Unibersidad sa mga honor students.
“This is one way of ensuring that the best and the brightest students will consider taking up law at UST,” ani Divina sa Annual Faculty Assembly noong Hulyo 1.
Galing kay Divina mismo ang pondo para sa allowance. Nagbigay din ang kanyang law firm ng dalawang milyon upang mas mapaigting pa ang programang ito.
Maaring makakuha ng scholarship kung maaabot ang QPI ng estudyante sa 2.10 o 86 percent.
Bibigyan rin ang mga estudyanteng ito ng libreng subkripsyon sa “MyLegalWhiz” na isang online database sa jurisprudence at law commentaries.
Ayon kay Divina, ginagawa niya ang mga ito upang mapabilang ang Faculty of Civil Law sa mga nangungunang law school sa bansa.
“I’m really obsessed of producing bar topnotchers and having a higher passing percentage in the bar exams.”
