September 18, 2015, 10:29p.m. – THOMASIAN poet and
former Varsitarian associate editor Carlomar Daoana will
receive the Metrobank Foundation’s Alice Guillermo Award for Art Criticism for
his essay “Awestruck with Agency.”
In a press release, the Metrobank Foundation said a special
competition for art criticism was held to promote Philippine art and
culture and a deeper understanding and appreciation of art.
Daoana’s piece was a critical appraisal of the artwork
“Attack on the Righteous” by Mark Andy Garcia that won the grand
prize in the Metrobank painting competition in 2007.
Daoana said he was inspired by the books of Guillermo on the
perception of art.
“She has taught me a lot about looking at art and how it has
both social and transcendental claims on experience. Her prose, needless to
say, is magnificent,” he said.
Daoana, a Palanca awardee, was formerly an
in-house writer for the Finale Art File gallery.
The Guillermo Award was recently added to the annual
Metrobank Art & Design Excellence (MADE) competition. Cedric
