April 9, 2016, 7:20p.m. – THE UNIVERSITY captured its first podium finish in the UAAP Streetdance competition at the MOA Arena Saturday.
Newcomers UST Hype, which took the place of the UST Salinggawi Dance Troop, finished second runner-up using a political-inspired routine.
UP Street bagged its third straight title with a choir-themed performance while De La Salle University placed second.
“Gusto naming magbigay ng lasting impression at gusto naming mapakinggan,” UST coach Chips Beltran said in a post-awarding interview. “Baguhan tayo dito, dayo tayo dito. Itong top three [finish] bonus na lang for us.”
UST clad a modified barong and saya costume along with one dancer in a farmer-inspired attire. The election-relevant piece also utilized Gloc-9’s hit song “Upuan” in a part of their performance.
The group ended its routine with one member flashing a “vote wisely” card to the audience.
UST Hype is a combination of College of Rehabilitation Sciences’ dance crew, Flux, and a multi-college group, Project Pax.
The second runner-up finish marked the highest finish of UST since the competition started in 2011. Only La Salle and UP have won the title since then. John Chester P. Fajardo
