A FACULTY member from the UST Department of Biological Sciences was elected head of the Philippine Society of Microbiology (PSM), an organization that aims to promote scientific knowledge in the field.

Asst. Prof. Donna May Papa won the election for president of the organization on July 26.

Papa said that under her leadership, the PSM would seek to boost microbiology research and education in the Philippines to help communities.

“Now more than ever, it is essential that we as microbiologists meet our mission to forge further ahead toward the understanding and impact of microbiology, by making sure that we also connect and empower communities in the country,” Papa told the Varsitarian.

Papa has been serving the organization since 2008.

She appointed another Thomasian, Carmela Vannette Vicera, as the recording secretary of PSM.

Papa finished her bachelor’s degree in medical technology in 1999, master’s degree in microbiology in 2004, and doctorate degree in biological sciences in 2008 in the University.

Vicera earned her bachelor’s and master’s degree in microbiology at UST.
