Retired UST-Alfredo M. Velayo (AMV) College of Accountancy assistant professor Marie Anne Lourdes Guanzon died on Friday, Aug. 11. She was 66.

The college announced her death on its Facebook page, and her son Mark confirmed it to the Varsitarian.

“She had been confined in the intensive care unit since her stroke last April 26. She had battled a lot of infections resulting from complications from her stroke and undiagnosed diabetes,” Mark said.

She was loving and thoughtful but strict and firm. Mom was also fond of touching people’s lives. She has been our inspiration in helping others in need,” he added.

Guanzon spent 17 years teaching at the College of Accountancy, and during that time, she became known to her students as “Mama G.”

“You could chat with her one-on-one after class, shoot her a message or email, or just have a casual ‘kumustahan’ talk about life,” said Kirsten Imperial, a former student of Guanzon’s. “She’s like a mother figure to us.”

Before her stint at the College of Accountancy, Guanzon spent 10 years at the College of Commerce and Business Administration.

She became auditor of the UST Faculty Union in 2015.

In 2017, she was awarded the Gawad Benavides during the Dangal ng UST Awards for her two decades of service to the University.

After 26 years in UST, Guanzon retired on May 31, 2022.

Guanzon’s wake will be held from Aug. 12 to 16 at the La Casa Sagrada Memorial Park in San Fernando, Pampanga. Mabel Anne B. Cardinez and Fernando Pierre Marcel B. dela Cruz with reports from Samantha Fatima C. Creencia
