Vice President Maria Leonor "Leni" Robredo and Sen. Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan are the most preferred candidates of Thomasians for president and vice president, according to a survey by the Varsitarian.

VICE PRESIDENT Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo is the choice of 9 out of 10 UST students for president in the 2022 elections, results of a Varsitarian survey showed.

Robredo, an independent presidential candidate, drew the support of 3,973 Thomasians who participated in the survey, or 90.3 percent of the total 4,401 respondents.

Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, Robredo’s running mate who is running under the Liberal Party, topped the vice-presidential survey, being the choice of 3,630 respondents or 82.5 percent.

Eighty-one percent of the respondents were registered voters, of whom 91.7 percent chose Robredo and 84.7 percent chose Pangilinan.

Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., son and namesake of the late Philippine dictator, and standard-bearer of Partido Federal ng Pilipinas, placed a far second, chosen by 183 respondents or 4.2 percent.

Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso, running under Aksyon Demokratiko, placed third with 118 or 2.7 percent of the respondents.

Sen. Panfilo “Ping” Lacson ranked fourth with 73 (1.7 percent), followed by labor leader Leody de Guzman (33, 0.7 percent), former Palace spokesman Ernesto “Ernie” Abella (7, 0.2 percent), and former defense secretary Norberto Gonzales (1, 0.0 percent). 

Faisal Mangondato and Dr. Jose Montemayor Jr. did not figure in the survey.

In the vice-presidential survey, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio of Lakas-CMD ranked a far second, chosen by 282 respondents or 6.4 percent, while Dr. Willie Ong of Aksyon Demokratiko was in third place with 231 or 5.2 percent.

Completing the top five were Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III in fourth place (126, 2.9 percent) and Walden Bello in fifth place (108, 2.5 percent). 

Deputy Speaker Lito Atienza ranked sixth (10, 0.2 percent), while Carlos Serapio and Manny SD Lopez tied for seventh place (7each, 0.2 percent). 

Rizalito David had zero support in the survey.

The Varsitarian conducted the survey via Google Forms from Feb. 20 to Mar. 20, 2022, with 4,401 Thomasians participating. It had a ±1.7 percent margin of error at a 98.3-percent confidence level.

The survey used a randomized stratified sampling method wherein students were randomly selected based on the determined sample size for each college, faculty, or institute.

Eighty-one percent of the respondents were registered voters, of whom 68 percent will be first-time voters in the upcoming polls.

First-year students who completed the survey comprised 22.3 percent of the total respondents; sophomores, 23.2 percent; juniors, 24.5 percent; seniors, 21.5 percent; fifth-year students, 1.1 percent; and postgraduates, 7.4 percent.

Eighteen faculties, colleges, and institutes participated in the survey.
