Golden Tigresses snap losing skid with big win vs. FEU

Jan. 10, 2015, 6:42 p.m. - THE UST Golden Tigresses arrested their five-game losing skid with a come-from-behind win over the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws,  21-25, 27-25, 25-16, 25-23, to cap round one of the UAAP Season 77 women’s volleyball tournament at the San Juan Arena Saturday.

Pamela Lastimosa scored 17 points, while rookie Cherry Rondina added a career-high 16 to power the Tigresses to only their second win in seven matches.

The Tigresses overcame a one-set deficit and a tough stand by the Lady Tamaraws to remain in the final four hunt.

Adamson whips Tiger Spikers

Jan. 7, 2015, 6:30 p.m. - THE UST Tiger Spikers opened their year with a  defeat at the hands of a rejuvinated Adamson University Falcons, 20-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-27, in the UAAP Season 77 men's volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena Wednesday.

With Adamson at match point, UST's Jason Sarabia unleashed a quick hit for an equalizer, 24-all.

But Adamson's Michael Sudaria, who tallied 22 points, finished the match with a back-to-back off-the-block spikes.

Lastimosa, Tunay rue lack of focus for Tigresses’ slump

VETERAN Golden Tigresses Pamela Lastimosa and Carmela Tunay admitted that their lack of focus has resulted in one of the most disappointing starts for UST in the UAAP volleyball tournament.

Tunay stressed that despite entering every game well-equipped, the team’s morale and confidence begin to dip once they commit errors on the court.

Tunay, who averaged only four points in the first five games, said that she understood why she was benched recently. She acknowledged that head coach Odjie Mamon expected more from her but she could not deliver.

UST assistant coach Ballesteros quits

Dec. 19, 2014, 5:41 p.m. - UST GROWLING Tigers assistant coach Ernesto “Estong” Ballesteros has formally resigned from his duties to focus on other matters.

In a phone interview with the Varsitarian Friday, Ballesteros said he originally planned to leave with former head coach Pido Jarencio earlier this year.

But he said he stayed when asked by new chief tactician Bong dela Cruz to stay put.

“Plano ko na rin sumabay kay coach Pido kaso nag-stay naman ako dahil kinausap ako ni coach Bong," he said.

Golden Booters drop third straight game

Dec. 12, 2014, 11:26 a.m. - THE UST Golden Booters remained winless in three games after yielding to the Ateneo de Manila University, 2-3, in the UAAP Season 77 men's football tournament at the FEU Diliman pitch Thursday.

An own goal in the 85th minute by  Golden Booter Lord Jimena helped Ateneo secure the win.

"We are committing the same mistakes. The team still lacked experience. They tend to be demoralized inside and it's affecting our offense," head coach Marjo Allado said.

Bullpups demolish UST Tiger Cubs

Dec. 10, 2014, 11:59 p.m. - THE UST Tiger Cubs took a shellacking at the hands of defending champion National University Bullpups, 71-44, in the UAAP Season 77 juniors' basketball tournament at the Ateneo Blue Eagle Gym Wednesday.

The Cubs had no answer to the overwhelming size of NU as they were badly outrebounded, 30-50, en route to their most lopsided loss of the season, their third in four games.

"It wasn't a mental lapse for the team, its just that NU really sowed how tall and mature they are. Parang pang college level na talaga," head coach Allan Ascue told the Varsitarian.

Ateneo’s own goal gives UST Lady Booters’ first win

Dec. 8, 2014, 12:13 p.m. - THE UST Lady Booters notched their first win after Ateneo de Manila University scored in its own goal, 1-0, in the UAAP Season 77 women's football tournament at the FEU Diliman pitch Sunday.

UST scored in the 62nd minute after Ateneo defender Ramona Sagcang accidentally kicked the ball in the wrong direction, sending it past their own goalie Kimberlee Jimenez.

Ateneo tried to stage a comeback late in the second half with a free kick from Cathleen Rodriguez in the 71st minute, but UST goalkeeper Princess Aguilar prevented the equalizer.

Cubs blow out UP for first win

Dec. 7, 2014, 12:06 a.m. - THE UST Tiger Cubs held back a furious comeback attempt by the University of the Philippines to book their first win, 60-48, in the UAAP Season 77 juniors’ basketball tournament at the Ateneo Blue Eagle gym Saturday.

UP jumped to an early 16-6 run in the fourth quarter and limited the Tiger Cubs to only three field goals.

But Enzo Montes and Adolph Salinas buried five free throws in the final minute to secure the win.

Ateneo hands Golden Tigresses’ 3rd straight loss

Dec. 7, 2014, 6:09 p.m. - THE UST Golden Tigresses suffered their third straight loss, this time at the hands of defending champion Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles, 21-25, 13-25, 19-25, in the UAAP Season 77 women's volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan Saturday.

UST dropped to a 1-3 win-loss record while the Lady Eagles remained undefeated in four games. 

UST Golden Booters succumb to FEU in shootout

Nov. 30, 2014, 10:00 p.m.DEFENDING champion Far Eastern University outgunned the UST Golden Booters in a shootout, 7-4, at the start of UAAP Season 77 men's football tournament at the FEU-Diliman pitch Sunday.

Down by four goals to begin the second half, the Golden Booters unloaded back-to-back goals after team captain Gino Clarino scored a penalty in the 70th minute and Steven Anotado added another one four minutes later to cut their deficit, 3-5.

FEU's Jesus Melliza responded with his own goal in the 75th minute to keep UST at bay, 6-3.
