SA KASALUKUYANG torneo ng UAAP men’s seniors basketball, nasa solong ikatlong puwesto ang University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers matapos ng isang makapigil-hiningang panalo kontra sa Adamson Falcons na umabot ng dalawang overtime period.

At isa sa pinakamalaking dahilan dito ay ang pagbabalik ng mahusay na shooting guard ng UST na si Cyrus Baguio.

TATLONG araw mula nang sila ay matalo sa defending champion na De La Salle University sa overtime period, muli na namang umabot sa sukdulan ang UST nang kanilang harapin ang mapanganib na Adamson Falcons.

Pagkatapos ng dalawang overtime period, nanaig ang Growling Tigers, 92-88, noong Agosto 25 sa Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Sa likod ng magandang laro ni Jemal Vizcarra, na nagtapos na may game-high na 21 puntos, umangat ang UST sa ikatlong puwesto sa kanilang 6-4 na kartada.

THE UST Men’s Volleyball Team were a game away from a back-to-back championship for the first time last UAAP season, but the De La Salle University Green Spikers stood in their way in the penultimate set of their championship match.

With the score tied at 14-all in the deciding set, the Tiger Spikers surrendered a kill followed by an error to lose the game and the crown to the Green Spikers.

THE Most Valuable Player (MVP) in last year’s basketball junior version of the University Athletics Association of the Philippines tournament will not play for the UST Growling Tigers in this year’s collegiate cage wars.

LAST UAAP season, the Thomasian community’s worst fears came true.

The UST Growling Tigers, undoubtedly one of the best teams in the history of the UAAP men’s basketball tournament, failed to enter the Final Four for the first time since the system started in 1994.

Not only that, but UST’s famed “four-peat”, a feat they accomplished from 1993 to 1996 under the tutelage of Januario “Aric” Del Rosario, was likewise duplicated by the De La Salle University Green Archers.

POPULAR teen actress Diana Marie “Dimples” Romana will be UST’s official courtside reporter in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament this season.

Romana, a 17-year-old Tourism sophomore from the College of Education, was chosen by Studio 23, the network carrier of the UAAP’s 65th season.

Dimples underwent a selection process composed of a screening committee from ABS-CBN to represent UST.

Having student courtside reporters from participating schools was an idea conceptualized by Studio 23 back in the 63rd Season.

EMPLOYING tenacious defense throughout, the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers exacted revenge on the San Sebastian Stags, 89-70, to salvage third place in the final playing day of the 3rd Spring Oil Asian Universities Basketball Championship last June 20 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Thirty years ago, a historic battle between the hard court stars of UST and the stars of Philippine cinema took place in the home of the then Glowing Goldies. The varsity team of UST squared off against a visiting FPJ All-Star selection. Unfortunately what was supposed to be a game of friendship and camaraderie turned into a frenzied rumble.

With the game drawing to a close, action star and famous movie villain Romy Diaz engaged in a scuffle with spectators after being offended by a harsh remark from one of the students.

LAST year, the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers failed to enter the UAAP Final Four since the format was introduced in 1994. This, after head coach Januario “Aric” Del Rosario decided to bar Cyrus Baguio, Melchor Latoreno, Gilbert Lao, and Kenneth Co from playing .

Del Rosario was compelled to make the difficult decision was because some of those players opted to simply play in the Philippine Basketball League (PBL), sacrificing their commitment to UST and more importantly, their studies.
