Chem eng’g students place second in research tilt

March 1, 2015, 1:54 p.m. - UST CHEMICAL Engineering students won second place in the National Undergraduate Research Contest of the Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers (PIChE) National Convention last Feb. 18 to 21 in Puerto Princesa.

Fifth-year students Bob Canstrence, Marianne Fuentes, and Cham Faustino gained recognition for their study titled “Physical Characterization of Polymerized Whey Protein-stabilized Virgin Coconut Oil-in-water Emulsion," which deals with emulsification (breaking down of fats) in commercial and alternative coco butter using whey protein.

Faculty union’s P26-M claim dismissed anew

Feb. 15, 2015, 2:34 p.m. - THE SUPREME Court has denied the UST Faculty Union's (USTFU) motion to reconsider a ruling junking a claim for P26 million in hospitalization and medical benefits, terminating the case against the University.

In a decision dated Oct. 22, the court denied the motion "with finality," saying there was no “substantial argument” presented to merit a reconsideration.

Artlets council seeks to regain trust after loss of funds

Feb. 11, 2015, 12:13 a.m. - THE PRESIDENT of the Arts and Letters Student Council (ABSC) said the council was doing everything to regain the trust of the students after the loss of P50,000 in funds last October.

“Gagawin namin ang lahat ng aming makakaya para maibalik ang tiwala niyo, pero kung hindi niyo po susubukan na magtiwala ulit, walang kwenta 'yung pagsubok namin na ibalik 'ulit 'yung tiwala,” ABSC President Marie Jann Lazo said in a dialogue titled “Speak Up: Face-to-Face with the Student Council and the Administration” held Tuesday.

UST cracks top 10 of Industrial Eng’g certification exam

Feb. 10, 2015, 9:06 p.m. - TWO THOMASIANS landed in the top 10 of the November 2014 Industrial Engineering certification exam, results from the Industrial Engineering Certification Board (IECB) showed.

Leading the new batch of certified Thomasian industrial engineers are seventh-placer Bernard Lorenz Refuerzo, who posted a score of 78.73 percent, and ninth-placer Vincent Alejandrino with a score of 78.18 percent.

UST recorded an 81.25-percent passing rate with a total of 39 passers.

Thomasians to wear summer uniform starting Feb. 19

Feb. 4, 2015, 3:00 p.m. - THOMASIAN students will start using the type-B “summer uniforms” as an everyday school wear, beginning Feb. 19, or after Ash Wednesday until the end of the second semester.

“Following the resolution made by the Council of Regents in June 2014, the Type-B or Summer Uniform will be officially used as an everyday school wear from Thursday after Ash Wednesday until the end of the summer period,” read the Feb. 3 memorandum signed by Secretary General Fr. Winston Cabading, O.P.

UST down to 4th place in civil eng’g board exams

Dec. 12, 2014, 10:07 a.m. - THE UNIVERSITY'S passing rate in the recent licensure examination for civil engineers declined to 87.76 percent from last year's 91.79 percent, but one Thomasian finished third place.

UST placed fourth overall with 215 passing out of 245 Thomasian examinees, results from the Professional Regulation Commission showed. Last year, 179 out of 195 examinees passed, placing UST second on the list of top-performing schools.

AB student council loses funds; officers in hot water

THE FACULTY of Arts and Letters Student Council (ABSC) last Nov. 22 said money was stolen from its office last Oct. 23, confirming an earlier statement released by the Board of Majors (BOM).

The ABSC, in its own statement, said it lost about P50,000 in cash, which was supposed to finance activities like the Athena Cup, NGO fair, and the general staff assembly.

In a meeting last Nov. 11, ABSC officers and the BOM discussed statements made by students who were said to be in the council office when the alleged theft happened, namely: ABSC President Marie Jann Lazo, Treasurer Julienne Avila, ABSC Chief of Staff Emmanuel Arre, and board committee members Patricia Umali, Jancis Valera, and Richard Umali.

THE UNIVERSITY posted better results in the November 2014 licensure examinations for chemical engineers, with three Thomasians landing in the top 10.

The University recorded a higher passing rate of 69.12-percent (94 passers out of 136 examinees) compared with last year’s 58.97 percent (69 out of 117 examinees), results from the Professional Regulation Commission showed.

Leading the new batch of Thomasian chemical engineers is second-placer Joseph John Liwanagan with a score of 83.40 percent, followed by Francis Jessy Liggayu at seventh place (82.80 percent), and William Macasero Jr. at ninth place (82.50 percent).

Hazel Dorothy Cesar of the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman finished first place with a score of 85.40 percent.
